Kwinana council just signed off on an $80k feasibility study for FOGO, a scheme the council already voted down in 2023 because it was 'too expensive'. Since then, Kwinana's waste-to-energy plant came online, ending landfill dependence. But the State Government's unpassed waste strategy still lurks, so the council wants to 'be consistent'. That means paying for a study now, deciding later. $80k of your rates to hedge against a policy that might collapse when the government changes. Neighbouring Cockburn doesn't have FOGO; Rockingham's residents are already furious. This isn't evidence-based planning, it's risk management via consultancy. Beata🚨spent her first night in KY’s Campbell Co #Detention Cen in a cell with black mold covering the air vents, dead bedbugs in the room’s corners, & blood smeared above the doorway. We spend roughly twice as much as other western countries for mediocre results. We seem to be exceptionally bad at living longer lives by spending more on healthcare." (from the book I'm writing) This is because we don't have an actual system. Just a cobbled together collection of public and private silos with lots of holes in between. The greatest trick coffee pod companies ever pulled was convincing people to pay more for cheap coffee wrapped in trash. Tens of billions of single-use coffee pods and capsules are used every year. Many are made from mixed plastic, foil, aluminum, filters, lids, and wet coffee grounds, which makes them annoying or impossible to recycle through normal curbside systems. Even the 'recyclable' ones often require special collection programs most people don't have easy access to.
