”[Droughts worsened by climate change] exposed the vulnerability of Zambia and Zimbabwe’s hydropower-dependent electricity systems, triggering severe power shortages and renewing interest in coal.” But: “Thousands of households and businesses have installed rooftop solar systems to reduce dependence on the unreliable national grid.” https://news.mongabay.com/2026/07/climate-shocks-hit-hydropower-in-southern-africa-reviving-interest-in-coal/ #Climate #ClimateCrisis #Drought #Hydropower #Water #Renewables #Coal #FossilFuels #Electricity

Please submit your objection to this monster coal mine expansion today. The emissions from this project (over a biollion tonnes of CO2) are equivalent to 2.5x the annual emissions for Australia. How to guide here: https://www.lockthegate.org.au/hvo_ipc_submissions https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2026/jul/26/hunter-valley-operations-biggest-coalmine-extension-nsw-planning-commission #ClimateChange #Coal #emissions #HunterValley

Bank of England says coal is too risky Hover or focus to reveal Sensitive
This seems significant. The Bank of England will stop accepting bonds linked to coal. This means commercial banks can no longer use bonds linked to coal as “collateral” when they borrow money from the BoE. "The Bank’s new policy suggests that bonds linked to thermal coal are now too risky to sit on its balance sheet, as an international shift away from dirty fossil fuels towards greener energy could end up wiping out their value." Please. Let it happen! https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/jul/19/bank-of-england-bonds-coal-loans-assets #Coal #FossilFuels #UK

I had a good day yesterday, watching 4 films :) "The Last First: Winter K2" (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt39150288/) - a rather heavy one to start with, about an expedition up the #mountain #K2 that goes badly wrong. Next was "The Wind's Thirst" (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt39172060/) about some indigenous Colombians at the mercy of #coal extraction and #WindFarm projects redirecting river water and subjecting them to violence. "Hell's Army" (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt39830102/) - was very interesting - about the origins of the #WagnerGroup and their involvement in various wars. In the Q&A afterwards, they said that some former Wagner Group members are now security on #Russia's "Shadow Fleet" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_shadow_fleet) Last was "Notes From The Underground" (https://www.sheffdocfest.com/film/notes-underground) about the #HipHop music scene in #CapeTown and how it developed under #apartheid up to the present day. In their Q&A they said they spent 34 days in 2017 filming, but lost all the footage in the burglary :( After mourning for a while, they then had to go back and shoot it all again. There were loads of other interesting-looking films I would like to watch, but I could only make the Sunday :( There was also a #BurningMan series on #HBO (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt29033873) that they showed a couple of episodes from, but I was too late to get tickets. I really need to look out for that as my mate said it was good! #FilmFestival #Documentary #Sheffield

AI boom means US is now ‘investing more’ in fossil-fuel power than China A rapid expansion of data centres across the nation is at the heart of the #US tech sector’s plans to continue “dominat[ing]” the global artificial intelligence (#AI) industry. High demand for #electricity to power these data centres has led to companies rushing to build new gas-fired power plants across the country. This trend, combined with “soaring” gas-turbine prices, drove a threefold increase in US gas‑power investment in 2025 – and the #IEA expects this to continue throughout 2026. As the chart below shows, Chinese investment in #coal- and #gas-fired power is expected to drop this year, amid domestic policy changes and the Iran war sending gas prices spiralling. Together, these trends mean the IEA expects US investment in fossil-fuelled power plants to overtake China’s in 2026. https://www.carbonbrief.org/ai-boom-means-us-is-now-investing-more-in-fossil-fuel-power-than-china/ #FossilFuels #ClimateCrisis

RE: https://mastodon.hongkongers.net/@cbcnb_mirror/116240918136048249 I'm one of those pesky holdouts. Do I want the absolute clowns at the head of NB Power having real-time access to my energy consumption? Absothefucklutely not! Every "development" from nbp over the last decade has turned out to be a grift. They have wasted tens - maybe hundreds of millions of grifts, many millions more on funding dictators, and BILLIONS sunk into our #nuclear plant because they wouldn't listen to the experts about maintenance. Take for instance Joi Scientific - the "perpetual energy" company nbp partnered with in order to buy yachts for conmen. Or how about the not one but TWO companies they spun up to "build" #smr (small modular nuclear reactors). Buffoons! There was of course the deal with the dictators of Venezuela to run our #HeavyFuelOil power plant on some proprietary product on a 25 year agreement, rather than invest in renewables. nbp doesn't own a single windfarm, and has gone out of their way to make it harder for wind project to take root. Losers! Despite this, we have about 400MW of wind online - the majority of this has local #Indigenous groups as the majority investors. nbp keeps fighting in court to extend the life of our #coal buring power plant (!!!) past 2030. And losing. nbp is absolutely desperate for money and the government board is actually doing a pretty good job of protecting the citizens by constantly denying nbp's rate increase asks. There is NO WAY they are not going to sell our data to anyone who will give them a nickle. Day after day, year after year, we not only let these incompetent and dangerous people poison us and waste ungodly sums of money... we're paying them millions of dollars to do so. #nbPower #SurveillanceCapitalism #OilLobby

"In a detailed report released last week, titled The Urgent Case Against Data Centers, #FWW pointed to some of the 'documented harms caused by AI and data centers,' including: - Enormous #energy footprints: A single hyperscale data center can consume as much energy as 2 million US households. - A lifeline for #FossilFuels: The thirst for fuel is being met by keeping old #coal-fired power plants running and by building new natural gas ones. [And restarting old #NuclearPlants] - Skyrocketing electricity costs: Increased #EnergyDemand can raise residential rates, which soared 31% from 2020 to 2025 (compared to 4% from 2015 to 2020). - Drained water resources: By 2028, AI data centers could use as much water as 18.5 million households, just for cooling their servers. - An investment bubble: A handful of companies are investing in one another and increasingly turning to risky debt structures to hide the threat of the bubble. - A litany of other harms: This includes massive amounts of electronic waste (#EWaste), unrelenting noise pollution, loss of #farmland, political instability from deepfake videos, lost revenue from data center tax incentives, and child endangerment from #AI #chatbots." #NoDatacenters #NoAI #NoNukesForAI #UnrestrictedGrowth #WaterIsLife #NoisePollution #AISucks #USPol

We'd emailed the wonderful Liam of https://www.midlandsandcoast.co.uk/ to try to sort out a #coal delivery to #ourplace which fronts the #towpath of the #Bridgewater #Canal. I took a photo of his #boat last time we got #fuel from him. It's based the same distance on one side of #PrestonBrook #bridge as we are the other. This time I needed an emergency supply. He gave me a bag, lent me a barrow to carry it home and said he'd invoice me when he delivered all we have room to store. As I collected the fuel the sun came out to reveal The Midlands & Coast Canal Carriers Ltd yard in all its glory.
