@urlyman@mastodon.social alternatively, if we concentrate on electric smelters and kilns, we won't have enough clean energy to power them. Of course, we could continue to burn #FossilFuels to do either the power generation or the materials processing, but in that case we all die fairly quickly — probably this century. Or else we could use our available power and structural materials to build #GenAI #DataCentres, in which case we all die even more quickly. #ClimateEmergency /Continued

There seems a clearly possibility that Dat Centres may become this century's canals; as investment continues to expand & expensive infrastructure gets built, recent developments in AI & associated technologies suggest it may soon move from a networked utility to a local based (and powerful) software solution, making data centres (quickly) redundant... If so, pretty quickly (like canals) a major infrastructure sector will be over-taken by technological change. #DataCentres #technology

Issues with publishing your submission prior to the committee accepting it.

  1. No privilege. Publishing early means whatever's up is defended by you, not the Senate. If there is defamatory content.

  2. The committee can refuse it. Committees take prior publication as a signal the document is a press release. Rare, but it's their lever, and this Chair's committee will be drowning in campaign-generated submissions.

While the fast-tracked Datagrid project has been calculated to use 280 megawatts, the company has a secret plan to make it four times bigger and thirstier at 1000MW. An MBIE briefing from last year reveals Datagrid's goal is ‘‘almost double the consumption of the Tiwai Point smelter’’, currently NZ’s largest single electricity user. Datagrid want to nab a quarter of NZ's total electricity supply. However an Electricity Authority (EA) spokesperson said the authority had ‘‘not been informed’’ of the data centre’s ‘‘final capacity’’. Of course they haven't. And because Luxon's coalition is so naive, there are also datacentres being planned for Twizel, Ohau, Geraldine and Cromwell. The plan is to fill NZ with offshore-owned datacentres churning out AI-slop. And they're guaranteed continuous power at a fraction of the cost paid by consumers. Good news: the rezoning for the Mt. Pleasant AI data centre has been referred back to staff, likely relaying the approval hearing until after the October election - due to "huge public interest"! So it seems our government wants to invest in an industry that - checks notes - is making the world a worse place, as well as using massive amounts of energy and water 🤦🏻‍♀️ So depressing.
