"BREAKING! GEEF TEGENGAS IS BLOCKING THE CONSTRUCTION OF A MICROSOFT DATA CENTER While people can’t find proper housing and the climate crisis is escalating, Microsoft is building an enormous data centre in Amsterdam. Stop the data center that’s complicit in violence and oppression! This war machine doesn’t belong in our backyards. As long as they keep building the data center, we will come back!" 🧐 Keeping an eye on #tech giants because #PrivacyMatters “🚨 #Wrightstown ! Residents are already pushing back against a possible #DataCenter project in their backyard! People are tired of #BigTech treating #Wisconsin farmland, water, and power like corporate inventory...” https://bsky.brid.gy/r/https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:butbzsrnfrh7isiyaxpggat5/post/3mmcfkd2wok2t 🤖 via RSS feed. @VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social OP: "I'm convinced the size of the Utah hyperscale data center is being reported in 'acres' because the average person has no idea how big 40,000 acres is. It's 62 square miles. For a data center." 62 square miles, as a square, is just under 8 miles a side. Which is about 4 times what's occupied by O'Hare International Airport. #AI #datacenter

‘So much worse than I even thought’: Utah’s ‘hyperscale’ data center could create massive heat island near Great Salt Lake

https://www.sltrib.com/news/environment/2026/05/07/utahs-data-center-could-create/

Skeptics of the proposed hyperscale data center in Box Elder County are sweating about a lot more than its energy demands and potential toll on water supplies.

AI isn't just hungry for GPUs anymore — it's eating CPUs too. In 2026, server CPU lead times have stretched up to a year, prices are up 20%, and both Intel and AMD are sold out. The culprit? The shift from AI training to real-time agentic AI, which is pushing CPU-to-GPU ratios from 1:8 toward 1:1 in data centers. If you're managing IT assets, this changes your buying AND selling calculus. We break down what's driving the crunch, what's coming next (hint: Nova Lake and Zen 6 are both delayed to 2027), and how to turn the shortage to your advantage. https://www.buysellram.com/blog/why-ai-is-causing-a-global-cpu-shortage-and-what-it-means-for-your-business/ #ServerCPU #CPUShortage #AIInfrastructure #Intel #AMD #ITAD #DataCenter #ITAssetManagement #TechNews #EnterpriseIT #CPUPrices2026 #AgenticAI #technology

@Blender@mastodon.social Anthropic data centers cause massive environmental degradation. Please explain the wonderful things you're going to do with the money from that industry, and how it's going to balance said degradation. I'll wait. #datacenter #climate #environment

The Guardian | Google to tap into gas plant for AI datacenter in sharp turn from climate goals by Dara Kerr Texas power plant would emit 4.5m tons of carbon dioxide per year, more than that of the entire city of San Francisco Google has struck a partnership for a natural gas power plant that could provide energy for one of its datacenters in Texas, unearthed by new research and confirmed by the company. The move is part of an ongoing about-face for the tech giant, which once pledged to be carbon neutral by 2030 and has long been seen as a pioneer in clean energy. The gas power plant is slated to be built in Armstrong county, a sparsely populated area in the Texas panhandle. According to a report by the research organization Cleanview, the project is being led by Crusoe Energy, which partnered with Google to develop the datacenter campus known as “Goodnight”, named after a nearby town. Observer | Starcloud CEO Philip Johnston on Putting the First A.I. Data Center in Space by Tom Samiljan Starcloud-9293.jpg?quality=80&w=970" alt="Three men in black shirts posing for a photo" width="970" height="647" data-caption='Philip Johnston (middle) and his co-founders, Adi Oltean (right) and Ezra Feilden (left). Gregor Elgee'> In November, a 60-kilogram satellite the size of a small refrigerator called Starcloud-1 streaked into low Earth orbit aboard a SpaceX rocket carrying the first data-center-class GPU ever operated in space—an Nvidia H100 roughly 100 times more powerful than any prior orbital compute. Within weeks, Starcloud, the company making the satellite, announced it had trained a language model on the complete works of Shakespeare and had run Google’s Gemini from roughly 200 miles above Earth. “The spacecraft is performing better than we could have hoped for,” Philip Johnston, co-founder and CEO of Starcloud, told Observer. Johnston founded the Redmond, Wash. company in early 2024, backed by a conviction that has since attracted $200 million from investors, including Nvidia, In-Q-Tel, Sequoia Capital and Y Combinator: Rather than build better infrastructure on Earth to satiate A.I.’s runaway energy appetite, move the infrastructure off of Earth entirely. Today (March 30), the company announced it raised a $170 million in Series A funding at a $1.1 billion valuation, helping it reach unicorn status in just 17 months (and the quickest to do so in Y Combinator’s history). Johnston, 39, brings a distinctly financial pragmatism to the cosmos. Before pivoting to aerospace, Johnston served as an algorithmic trader at BNP Paribas, consulted for national space agencies at McKinsey and co-founded Opontia, an e-commerce aggregator that raised $46 million before being acquired. Starcloud-1 is the first data center in space Orbital data centers have a cooling problem Space data centers are gaining steam amid regulatory and political risks Read more: https://observer.com/2026/03/starcloud-ceo-philip-johnston-nvidia-space-data-center/ #datacenter #nvidia #space #spacex

2,080 acre hyperscale data center zoning map application submitted in Maysville-Mason County #Kentucky near the #OhioRiver in rural #Appalachia for “Cloud computing technologies.” The site is in the Ohio River Watershed, along the boundary between the Lee Creek and Lawrence Creek sub-watersheds. The project, west of downtown Maysville, is near Slack Pike Road, Germantown Road and Valley Pike near 'D's Thirsty Beaver' which is located at 3538 Germantown Rd, Maysville, KY 41056. This is the third hype-scale data center within 31 miles to be built. # 2, in the last image, at the former Stuart Coal power plant in Adams County, Manchester, Ohio, has already received federal approval. Another one is planned for the shuttered Killen Station in Rome, Ohio, just east of Manchester, Ohio, all on the Ohio River, in Adams County, also. #DataCenter #News The Maysville-Mason County Joint Planning Commission will host two days of public hearings on Wednesday, March 25, and Thursday, March 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Maysville Community and Technical College Fields Auditorium. https://maysville-online.com/news/214311/hyperscale-data-center-zoning-map-amendment-application-submitted Data Center portal, City of Maysville-Mason County Joint Planning Commission: https://www.cityofmaysvilleky.gov/departments/codes_department/data_center.php Data Center zoning application: https://cms5.revize.com/revize/maysville/Document%20Center/Forms/New%20node/Planning%20&%20Zoning/Rezoning%20Application%20-%20Proposed%20Data%20Center%20in%20Mason%20County.pdf?t=202603121435580&t=202603121435580
