“Runaway” land-clearing in NSW "Almost 90 football fields of woody habitat were bulldozed e v e r y d a y in NSW – despite pledges to rein it in." “Given there’s been no policy change since the government were elected in 2023 it’s no surprise to see that land clearing hasn’t been fixed." “Every hectare of trees bulldozed means fewer homes for wildlife and more carbon pollution in the atmosphere." >> https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2026/jul/21/nsw-land-clearing-increase-report #biodiversity #climate #harm #LandClearing #NSW #LoggingIndustry #crime #destruction #extractivism #regulation #wildlife #ScorchedEarth

I've got a question about Australian customary units of measurement. You've probably heard of very large volumes of water being measured in Sydney Harbours. For example: 'Three times the amount of water in Sydney Harbour.' My question is how much of the harbour are we including here? Like, is Middle Harbour included in a Sydney Harbour of water? What about the Lane Cove River? Are we cutting it off at Goat Island? Or Cockatoo Island? Or are we including the Parramatta River here? If so, how far up? All the salt water bits? In high tide? Or low tide? Or are including the water past the weir at Parramatta Quay? If so, are we measuring in regular conditions, or when the Parra River floods? And how far up the river are we going? Parramatta Lake is part of the same river system. Is Parra Lake included in a Sydney Harbour of water? Inquiring minds need to know... #Sydney #NSW #Australia #auspol

Disgraced former #LiberalPartypolitician #DarylMaguire’s insistence he knew nothing of a #conspiracy to create false visa applications for #Chinese nationals has been rejected by a jury, AAP reports. Maguire, the 67-year-old former member for #WaggaWagga, was found guilty in the Downing Centre district court on Friday of conspiring to create the bogus applications for 10 Chinese nationals purporting to employ them at businesses in the #NSW #Riverina region. As a result of the verdict, it can be revealed Maguire’s conviction and subsequent jail sentence from a previous #corruption probe were wiped on appeal in the lead-up to the visa trial. Maguire, whose #clandestine relationship with then-premier #GladysBerejiklian triggered her exit from politics, was convicted of #misleading a corruption probe about potential profits from a major property deal. Judge Justin Smith in March upheld Maguire’s appeal, quashing his conviction and ordering the charge be dismissed. The crown had alleged Maguire misled the #IndependentCommissionAgainstCorruption (#ICAC) about his dealings with former Sydney councillor #MichaelHawatt on a potential property development, in which Maguire could have received about $720,000 in commission. The corruption probe, including recorded phone calls discussing the development, triggered Maguire’s retirement from parliament in 2018. #auspol #NSWpol https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/live/2026/jul/17/australia-news-live-telstra-mobile-outage-parliament-inquiry-royal-commission-antisemitism-ai-anthony-albanese-labor-liberals-coalition-politics-ntwnfb?page=with%3Ablock-6a59adee8f085bcdc00818a0#block-6a59adee8f085bcdc00818a0

A new study has found #PetCats were #responsible for fewer than 1% of #NativeAnimals taken to #NSW #wildlife carers over an 11-year period. The study, done by #UniversityOfQueensland (UQ) researchers in collaboration with the #AustralianPetWelfareFoundation, has sparked renewed debate about the risk the popular pets pose to threatened wildlife. It analysed NSW wildlife rescue and rehabilitation data on 158 threatened and endangered native species between 2013 and 2024. There were 52,475 threatened animals taken to wildlife carers during that period, with 311 incidents attributed to cat attacks. That amounts to 0.6 per cent of cases. Lead researcher and wildlife ecologist, Kate Dutton-Regester from the UQ #SchoolOfVeterinaryScience, said it was important to make a distinction between domestic and feral animals. #auspol #fauna #cats https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-07-16/pet-cats-impact-on-threatened-wildlife-uq-study/106912594

It is comforting to know that the #Rich can’t do everything they want and that they will be held accountable. What is less clear is the ecological damage (vegetation and wildlife) that was done by the ?illegal? clearfelling of the land parcel. Even if the developer was to abide by the legally binding order to replant natives, it will take years to return to its original state. Unanswered are questions regarding the dubious ?shell? company which recently bought the land. Truly, #RealtyDevelopers can be some of the most #Greedy and #Unprincipled people who have little to no respect for laws and regulations — such as they are. There is also, of course, the lack of political will to save and conserve #Koala colonies and their habitat in #NSW. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-07-06/developer-quietly-sells-illegally-cleared-barden-ridge-site/106878518 #AusPol #NSW #Conservation

Sydney has just recorded its hottest June since records began in 1859. This is not "nice winter weather". It's another climate warning flashing in neon. Every new heat record is another reminder that burning coal, oil and gas has consequences. The fossil fuel lobby keeps telling us not to worry. Physics keeps proving them wrong. #climatechange #globalwarming #australia #nsw #renewables #climatecrisis https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2026/jul/04/sydney-records-hottest-june-since-1859-as-expert-warns-new-high-a-signature-of-global-warming

The Macquarie St/Gasworks Bridge, Parramatta, NSW. This iron lattice bridge on sandstone pillars was built in 1885, and still carries thousands of cars a day. It now also has a shiny new bike path underneath it. #bridge #engineering #building #structure #Parramatta #NSW #Australia

Platypuses need threatened species recognition in NSW, researcher says "The species was only "hanging on, not thriving" in NSW and the Murray-Darling Basin." "There's no state or national monitoring framework for platypuses...Dr Bino said platypuses had survived Australia's natural cycles for millions of years, but were now struggling to adapt to human-driven changes. We've been disrupting the natural flow regime and fragmenting and isolating platypus populations." "Platypus are pretty much wiped out from the mainland in South Australia. They used to occur all along the Murray but that's no longer the case." >> https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04-27/platypuses-should-be-threatened-species-in-nsw-researcher-says/106520128 #platypuses #conservation #habitat #rivers #NSW #monotremes #MDB #ThreatenedSpecies #biodiversity #water #pollution #sprawl #ImperviousSurfaces #roads #runoff #drowning #WipeoutAU

Governments failed to deliver $160m of river improvements including for now-parched NSW wetlands, report finds “Quite simply the environment is the loser along with the taxpayer...The failure to implement what was promised means that turtles, fish and wetlands die.” The Greens environment spokesperson, Sarah Hanson-Young, said the report “makes it abundantly clear that despite millions of dollars being splashed around, it has not gone to protecting the river”. >> https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/apr/23/governments-failed-to-deliver-160m-of-river-improvements-including-for-now-parched-nsw-wetlands-report-finds #water #wetlands #failure #MDB #biodiversity #wildlife #EnvironmentalFlows #ecosystems #rivers #NSW #RAMSAR #governance

WaterNSW criticised for ‘appalling’ decision after hundreds of turtles left to die in wetlands "Environmental flows refer to water released by the government from dams and tributaries into rivers and ecosystems to restore their health. The Gingham watercourse is home to three turtle species, the broad-shelled turtle, the Murray River turtle and the eastern long-necked turtle." "Cutmore said she was “not happy with what’s gone down” and was concerned irrigators were “calling the shots over and over”. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/apr/21/water-nsw-criticised-for-appalling-decision-after-hundreds-of-turtles-left-to-die-in-wetlands #biodiversity #turtles #wetland #EnvironmentalFlows #irrigation #cotton #NSW #wildlife #water #extractivism
