Europe's nuclear power is increasingly failing amid rising heat and droughts. France’s nuclear fleet has already seen a record number of heat-related outages this summer. Low river Danube waters forced Romania to shut both its nuclear reactors. Hungary is next. Isn’t it time they switch to wind and solar already? https://news.sky.com/story/hungary-to-shut-down-sole-nuclear-power-plant-as-danube-falls-to-record-low-13569304 #wind #solar #renewables #extremeweather #climate #heatwave #drought

🌱 The good environmental news from 2026, because the doom scrolling hides a lot. April was the first month in history where wind and solar beat gas worldwide. Renewables overtook coal as the planet's biggest power source in 2025, and clean energy covered all of the new electricity demand that year. The High Seas Treaty entered into force in January, putting real rules on the parts of the ocean outside any country's borders. Wildlife is coming back too. Black rhinos returned to a Zimbabwe park more than 30 years after poaching wiped them out. Alpine bearded vultures passed 100 breeding pairs and are now self-sustaining. Hawaii's stilt was just downlisted from endangered after 50 years of work. Even a snail declared extinct in 1996 is back on Norfolk Island, 1,300 strong. Cautious optimism is the honest take. Emissions are still way too high and too many species are still in trouble. But this year's wins are measurable, and they prove the fight is winnable. https://ember-energy.org/latest-updates/for-the-first-time-wind-and-solar-generated-more-electricity-than-gas-worldwide-in-april-2026/ https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/black-rhino-reintroduction-matusadona #ClimateHope #Conservation #Renewables

”[Droughts worsened by climate change] exposed the vulnerability of Zambia and Zimbabwe’s hydropower-dependent electricity systems, triggering severe power shortages and renewing interest in coal.” But: “Thousands of households and businesses have installed rooftop solar systems to reduce dependence on the unreliable national grid.” https://news.mongabay.com/2026/07/climate-shocks-hit-hydropower-in-southern-africa-reviving-interest-in-coal/ #Climate #ClimateCrisis #Drought #Hydropower #Water #Renewables #Coal #FossilFuels #Electricity

Multinational investment banks and foreign state wealth funds are cashing in on Scottish renewables. https://www.thenational.scot/news/26429214.scottish-wind-farms-paying-1bn-foreign-shareholders/ Scotland could bring energy into public ownership, costing you exactly the same as it will to not do it. "Most of the new #solar installations recorded in the government’s official figures are on household rooftops, although these smaller solar systems make up slightly less than a third of the country’s total solar power capacity." This is not success. It’s a system designed to funnel unimaginable wealth to fossil fuel corporations while the rest of us deal with soaring energy bills, extreme weather and the growing costs of the climate crisis. They want us to believe there's no money for affordable energy, climate resilience, or a faster transition to renewables There is money. It's sitting in corporate profit accounts Time to make polluters pay: https://act.gp/3RLI2EV #MakePollutersPay #Renewables #EndFossilFuels

A new report released by the Center for #Climate Integrity, reveals:🚨#FossilFuel companies knew as early as the 1960s: branding gas as “clean” was deceptive. 1966 Shell report indicated➡️methane gas was released in “embarrassingly large quantities” at oil fields. So in response,🚨FF cos sponsored & promoted their own research -like:🚨Gas Research Inst to create an appearance of objectivity & chg the narrative. Rs/FF companies are killing us/the🌎‼️ 💙#Renewables #Lies #USPol https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2026/07/natural-gas-methane-pollution-clean-branding-myth/

"The share of renewables on #Germany's power grids rose by 6.6 percentage points to 55% of the total last year, the sector's regulator said on Wednesday, as Europe's largest economy moves closer to its 2030 target [of 80%]. Within #renewables, offshore wind contributed a 31.1% share, solar 12.1% and biomass 8.4%, while the remaining 3.4% came from hydropower and other renewables." https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/renewable-energys-share-german-power-grids-reaches-55-2023-2024-01-03/

Since I have written about how bad tariffs on Chinese renewables are -- and since both Europe and the US (under both parties) have these tariffs -- I should explain in more detail what tariffs do in this case. tl/dr: "Oh no the fossil fuel I own is being underpriced by renewables how can I make renewables more expensive" #climate #renewables 1/n

I probably don't need to sing the virtues of renewables again but maybe every song about climate should have this refrain: they're the cheapest way to generate electricity ever created; the wind and sun are themselves free and all you have to do is build the devices to capture them and store/transmit the resulting electricity; no country or region has a monopoly on it and virtually every country can become largely energy independent, ending the hideous geopolitics of fossil fuel; and because they are dispersed they are relatively hard to target in war; also they don't pollute and poison like fossil fuel does at every stage from extraction to burning; and finally that's a lot of what we need to do to not utterly wreck the climate and thereby the planet and everything on it. Not my catchiest lyrics but.... https://www.meditationsinanemergency.com/a-million-warnings-and-one-huge-invitation-climate-2026/ #climate #climateChange #climateCrisis #renewables
