Ways to participate in tomorrow’s #mayday #strike that you may not have realized count as participation and arent abstaining from work, school, and shopping:

  • work slower on purpose
  • cry in class on purpose
  • spend cash at locally owned businesses
  • reduce internet & power use
  • visit niche websites instead of mainstream ones
  • do analog stuff
  • do a favor for a neighbor

Today in Labor History April 19, 1936: Arabs in Mandatory Palestine began a General Strike that lasted into October. It marked the beginning of the 1936-1939 Arab revolt, which sought to end colonialism in the region and the immigration of Jews. There was also a General Strike going on in Mandatory Syria. The strikers were demanding that the British Government change its policies in the two territories by (1) prohibiting further Jewish immigration; (2) prohibiting the transfer of Arab land to Jews; (3) and the establishment of a National Government. In response, the British government imposed heavy fines and demolished Arab homes. Proud to announce that my upcoming #nonfiction #picturebook is This Is Your Fight! Genora Johnson and the Flint Sit-Down Strike, to be published by Harper Collins next year. And it's being illustrated by The Brave Union (artists Kevin and Kristen Howdeshell)! Yesterday marked the anniversary of the end of the 1936-37 strike- one of the most successful in American history. Workers occupied GM factories in Flint and persuaded the automaker to recognize the UAW.
