Today I learned Scott Wiener, candidate for US House rep for #SanFrancisco #sfba, had his campaign put up a “parody” chatbot website of his opponent, Connie Chan, called ConnieChan dot AI, in which the people can “talk to Connie”. The chatbot “responds” as a caricature of Wiener’s opponent. His campaign also put up billboards advertising the website. Condemnation of the chatbot rightfully came swiftly from women leaders, including Nancy Pelosi. Wiener is now taking the site and the billboards down. The fact that Scott Wiener approved this stunt at all is a sign not only of poor taste but a fundamental disrespect for others. Using #AI to put words into your political opponent’s mouth—a woman and minority opponent at that—is tone-deaf and disgusting. San Francisco, you do NOT want this man—a genocide denier at that—representing you. VOTE FOR CONNIE CHAN. #scottWiener #misogyny https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/scott-wiener-says-conniechan-ai-chatbot-campaign-billboards-to-be-removed/

My grandmother passed away in April and her beloved cat is up for adoption in Novato. Abby is kind of a one-person cat from what we've seen. She adored Grandma but had no interest in the rest of us. I think she would be perfect for someone who lives alone and wants a dedicated companion but doesn't have other pets or a lot of people coming in or out (especially kids). Abby is 6 years old. Please feel free to share the listing. I really want her to find a new home. https://www.petfinder.com/cat/abby-1e9a8d40-e1ed-42ff-a907-99a7e3d86c74/ca/novato/jakes-place-cat-rescue-ca2182/details/

#SanJose #SFBA is renaming Plaza de Cesar Chavez to…something else. You can vote and rank the five options here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/29TD923 No, Parky McParkface isn’t on the list.

Alamo Drafthouse in San Francisco is no longer a place of honor. On top of all the depressing automation of the experience and loss of what used to be amazing, beautifully curated pre-show content, the new food app seemed designed to prevent people from tipping the hard-working servers who have to run around in the dark. #sfba

Grocery Outlet Bargain Market is deploying #AI facial recognition in their stores. It’s used for profiling. “The system takes images of customers and runs them against a “watchlist,” a database of people who have previously been identified after “causing harm in some way,” said Chris Ochs, who works at SAFR at RealNetworks, the AI company that created SAFR Guard, the security system being used at Grocery Outlet. If there is a match, a phone notification is sent to the retailer using the system.” #california #sfba #surveillance https://missionlocal.org/2026/07/sf-grocery-outlet-facial-recognition/

Some #GoodNews: I run an Instagram account with a pretty sizable following that posts car meets and events around the #SFBA (dave.carmeets on #Instagram). After several weeks of warning, I am now starting to reject event flyers that were created using #AI. I expected some pushback or anger over my decision, but much to my surprise, many event organizers that I talk to have been open to the idea and have given me alternative flyers that are human-made. In fact, I haven’t really gotten any pushback at all. This is going better than I expected. I’m looking forward to posting no more #AI #slop on my channel, and helping my followers enjoy an AI-free feed for a change.

Meanwhile, in the East Bay... "Alameda County’s new $2.4 million contract extension with Flock Safety, approved by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, includes automated license plate readers, which capture data from the backs of passing vehicles; pan-tilt-zoom cameras that provide operators with a real-time view of public areas; and a fleet of drones. While ICE doesn’t have direct access to Flock cameras, local law enforcement agencies outside of California have knowingly and purposefully shared data from their own systems with that agency, according to 404Media. And Flock’s surveillance capabilities are vast: Oakland’s license plate reader system captured data from over 638 million license plates last year." https://oaklandside.org/2026/07/01/2-4-million-surveillance-contract-with-flock-approved-by-alameda-county/ #Privacy #Surveillance #Flock #EastBay #SFBA #Oakland

Another gray rainy day, but the penguins are feeling brighter and more playful in today's #inkyDays drawing than in yesterdays. It's a new month, so there are new posts for my supporters on patreon and ko-fi. I'll be posting finished drawings and more in these posts this month: https://www.patreon.com/posts/154543614 https://ko-fi.com/Post/InkyDays-April-2026-O5O61X2LH7 #ink #drawing #art #penguins #sfba

It's a dark and rainy day, here in San Francisco. So I'm going with a comforting floral pattern in a sunny orange ink in today's #inkyDays drawing. Here's an in-progress shot. The rest is on my Patreon and Ko-fi: https://www.patreon.com/posts/154543614 https://ko-fi.com/Post/InkyDays-April-2026-O5O61X2LH7 #ink #drawing #art #wip #flowers #sfba #NoAI

Hey #sfba do you have a recommendation for solar panel installers who are familiar with townhomes and navigating their shared-insurance arrangements? South Bay preferred.

My friend gave me a tour of the newly-reconstructed temple, American Buddhist Cultural Society (San Bao Temple). What a beautiful and quietly vibrant place! Here are two images from the inside. On the left, one of the two symmetrical staircases to the main shrine. On the right, a view of the main shrine, still under construction, with an enormous Buddha. I love how my friends's reflection is apparent in the glass. #sfba

Oh wow! Even here in foggy San Francisco with tons of light pollution, we were able to see four of Jupiter's moons just now. And the moon is glorious! We actually took out our little telescope to get a better look. Amazing! Look up! #sfba #space #moon #jupiter #nightsky #science

@octothorpe@mastodon.online Access to nightly chargers is a huge roadblock. Most people in the #sfba live in apartment buildings, very few of which have chargers people can use easily. Many of the apartments buildings here are also old, and their landlords have no incentive to install chargers. As an aside, there seems to be a monopoly on residential charger installations. A colleague of mind found out that it costs $200k to install ONE CHARGER at an apartment complex in Cupertino, and the installer reserves the right to take a 50% cut of the charging fees. It’s really hard to justify spending $2M only to get 10 chargers for a building of a hundred units.
