The Guardian | AI chatbot fraud: the ‘gift card’ subcription that may cost you dear by Shane Hickey AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Some users rely on AI chatbots like Claude for everyday tasks, but a growing scam involves fraudulent “gift‑card” subscriptions that charge victims large sums without their consent. David Duggan, who paid $20 a month for Claude, discovered unauthorized $200 purchases for gift‑card vouchers on his credit‑card statement; Anthropic, the company behind Claude, suspended his account but could not explain the charges. Similar reports on Reddit describe multiple unexpected payments in pounds and euros, with scammers sending the supposed vouchers to victims’ personal emails, suggesting possible email compromise. Anthropic says it is adding new safeguards to block fraudulent gift‑card purchases, canceling suspect subscriptions and issuing refunds, and advises affected users to contact support, cancel the compromised card, and file a charge‑back claim with their bank. I just discovered that a "club" I wanted to join was actually "owned" by one of its "members." I've had experience with owned clubs before and that experience was bad. So I'm definitely not going to join this one. The other organization was totally profit motivated and prevented members from sharing any information about related services unless the member coughed up "sponsorship" money. They also promoted sponsors who offered inferior services, lying in reviews about quality. "Club" #scams.🙄

If you're on AO3, beware: the latest scam is bots pretending to be people who love your work and want to do an illustration for you... but you're expected to pay for it. Once they sucker you into paying, you either get nothing at all or AI "art". Ironically, I did recently have someone try this who was probably a genuine (albeit very pushy) artist. Even so, the answer was still a firm no. I put a lot of work into my writing and I allow people to read it free of charge, so I'm absolutely not paying for unsolicited embellishments. #writing #scams
