And here's your irregularly scheduled reminder to advise your friends and family about internet scams. I just received a message from "Government of Canada" telling me to download a file and check for my "child benefit and HST/GST Credit". There were several obvious errors that are probably meant to weed out folks who are still sharp enough to see them. #InfoSec #Scam #Scams

A dark pattern scam targeting older folks. Targets invest 20 minutes in a dementia quiz only to find at the end they have to pay for results, while a countdown clock ticks down from 15 minutes until the results expire. Cost appears to be $2 for 7-day access, but fine print is that it auto renews at $40/month… forever. #scams

I wonder if the discrepancy is because nobody is going to report the president for fraud Online scams cost Americans almost $150B last year – 7x more than reported https://9to5mac.com/2026/07/29/online-scams-cost-americans-almost-150b-last-year-7x-more-than-reported/ #Scams #US #FBI #ACAB #Tech

A GI-TOC report estimates Ukraine’s scam call-center industry can generate up to $1 billion a month, employ around 60,000 people and operate through about 1,000 offices. Victims linked to the networks have been identified in at least 29 countries. Recruiters target people as young as 15, while schemes increasingly use voice cloning, deepfakes and automated translation. https://sfg.media/en/a/ukraine-scam-call-centers-1-billion-month #Ukraine #Scams #Cybercrime #OrganizedCrime #AI

I know it's common advice for people to give out a fake number if they don't want to give their actual one but the fact of the matter is that you don't know whose life you're going to fuck with if you do that. There are so many ways that can go wrong. In my life currently, for example, someone has given my number out for some sort of mortgage purposes so now I'm signed up for a realty/mortgage scam that has been coming in a couple of times a day for the past week. The area code and first three are the same number but the last four are always different. My spam protection blocks the calls but then they go to voicemail and I get the notification sound, usually when I'm trying to sleep. I have yet to find a way to block spam calls from leaving voicemails on my current phone setup. If you must give out a fake number, memorize your local PD's non emergency number and give that. Or your local FBI office. Somewhere that deserves to get spam calls, and not some random person you don't know. Don't mind me, this is my daily "shaking fist at clouds and yelling about my lawn" moment. #Scams #Scammers #PhoneSpam

"When you wake up in the morning and someone says: 'If you send me $10, my dear, and tell me about your day,' it’s like Stockholm Syndrome. It’s worth the $10 to keep pretending that there is this person who loves you and wants to hear about your day." https://www.texasobserver.org/austin-novel-romance-scammers/ #fraud #scams #books #bookstodon #tech #MentalHealth #culture

No, AI is not conscious. Stop being stupid. Next thing you know people will start thinking Roombas are conscious, too. TBF I don’t think we have a good definition of “consciousness” or “sentience” so maybe we could just start declaring all manner of things as conscious to boost shareholder value. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/jul/19/could-ai-be-conscious #AI #fuckai #stupidity #scams

AAA California reporting phishing attempts: "... The reported phishing attempts included an email urging members to use expiring AAA credits and offering a free emergency car kit, as well as a text message offering a free first aid kit in exchange for completing a brief questionnaire. If you received either of these messages or something similar, do not interact with the message in any way and delete the message immediately. ..." #scams #phishing #aaa
