A dark pattern scam targeting older folks. Targets invest 20 minutes in a dementia quiz only to find at the end they have to pay for results, while a countdown clock ticks down from 15 minutes until the results expire. Cost appears to be $2 for 7-day access, but fine print is that it auto renews at $40/month… forever. #scams

@pft@infosec.exchange UNA exposes the USB port- is invitation to get it filled with mud or dirt. For example see: https://mark.stosberg.com/how-to-replace-the-battery-in-a-garmin-fenix-5-plus-watch/ Garmin keeps their charging port underneath where it's much more protected. That's my own blog I'm linking to, which deals how old Garmin Fenix watches can be bought inexpensively used, are durable and can be repaired yourself with a ~$20 battery found online... plus Garmin software is very advanced. I'm cheering for UNA to succeed, but they have challenges ahead.

@pft@infosec.exchange iPhones have waterproof USB-C. I understand why UNA is using USB-C, but I’m concerned it will be more failure prone than Garmin’s connector. A full USB-C port has 24 tiny connectors. Even a basic USB-C charge-only port has 4 tiny strips of metal. Garmin’s design less delicate and easy to clean.

@pft@infosec.exchange Hmm, I see that it's not advertising that, but I expect it will get that certification. The basic construction with rubber gaskets and bolts is exactly how the waterproof-and-repairable Garmin Fenix lines have been made for years. Lately, thanks to the EU, even more entry-level GPS watches from other brands are gaining replaceable batteries.

UNA is introducing a particularly repairable GPS smart watch. I suspect the success will hinge how fast *software* features get added, like maps and navigation. Because the hardware looks great. https://unawatch.com/ #cycling #running

@swat@fosstodon.org For Sway there a couple of options. If you add comments for keybindings formatted in a particular way, you can use Remontoire to view them: https://github.com/regolith-linux/remontoire Sway doesn’t support introspecting th keybindings via IPC, but the sway-scroll fork supports that. By using that, keybindings could be grabbed and formatted for Fuzzel or similar. Using sub-modes to organize key binds can also help. Finally, you probably don’t really need some and you can remove ones you don’t really need

@paoloredaelli @balloob @mozilla It seems like somewhere during the ongoing Chromebook era there was a mentality shift that a web browser should be able to do practically everything an OS could. At this point, what's left in terms of what a web browser /can't/ do? The framing has helped Linux because apps now seem as likely to be created for the web as they are for the dominant desktop OS.

@yy ideas to improve urban grocery bike parking:

  1. Make it plentiful
  2. Make it convenient
  3. Install good racks
  4. Accommodate all bikes
  5. Cover the racks if possible
  6. Make it visible and well-lit.
  7. Connect to the bike network.

@yy@datasci.social on why urban grocery stores should prioritize bike parking over car parking:

- You don't need a car for groceries
- Grocery access is an equity issue
- Car parking is expensive and subsidizes the rich
- We can have 10 more customers park per spot
- Induced demand works both ways
- Spillover benefits
- Built for the future

For running Linux apps on macOS there's now this Wayland compositor that's native to Mac. The demo video features Fuzzel by @dnkl@social.treehouse.systems and Niri by @YaLTeR@mastodon.online

https://youtu.be/VS3vQp5i8YQ?si=u52YycbIYc5458GK

Looks like the expected way to use it is to run Linux apps on a remote machine and use "waypipe" to display them natively on macOS.

It's novel in that's there's no VM involved.

@ecodiv@fosstodon.org Whoa, so like for a heatmap, it might visually merge cells that would be colored the same?

@ecodiv@fosstodon.org Do you happen to have a screenshot of how you used the Merged Features renderer? Sounds interesting.

@YaLTeR@mastodon.online Congratulations on the #Linux Wayland compositor #Niri surpassing Sway in Github stars.

Sway is great and continues a steady growth trend, while Niri is a welcome alternative!

@standev@mstdn.social I explain you can't use Windows-only apps if they are using MS Office, they should use LibreOffice or Google docs. In exchange, they generally won't have to worry about viruses, the computer will run faster, and they may need to consider Linux-compatibility when they shop for a printer.

@fschaap@mastodon.social I’ve supported and still support grandparent-age folks using Linux and it’s always turned out OK. The key thing is that they are interested and away of the trade-offs as this woman seems to be.

I'm a Google Workspace admin, and a team member sent me a screenshot showing that a message they wanted to send was being blocked because it violated an organizational policy-- which was news to me-- I hadn't put in place to block messages based on their content. Turns out Google Workspace now warns by default when the message content mentions gender identity. #google #privacy #politics
