Jack Tame has a fantastic interview with Professor Marco te Brömmelstroet from the University of Amsterdam on how to make city streets better and do much more for societies than move people around in private cars. The biggest threat to children's lives in western societies is car traffic. There are other options. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPIjaWFrC5Q #nz #UrbanPlanning #BikeTooter #LessCars #cities #TVNZ #JackTame

Good to know: protecting against urban heatwaves means dissipating heat at night, not just giving shade during the day. India’s Supreme Court ruled that safe, accessible sidewalks are a constitutional right Walking is the simplest health habit, but many cities make it impossible. imagine 55-60 days/year with temperatures above 30C. (current average: 14 days/year.) that's what climate change will likely bring to southern Ontario by 2080.

current tree canopy favours wealthy areas. so planting should be focused in neighbourhoods with few trees.

while we're at it: replace that awful Astral street furniture with actual shade at public transit stops.

While a car climbing a concrete divider looks like an infrastructure failure, it is actually the barrier successfully absorbing an impact that otherwise would have struck whoever was riding in the bike lane." 💯 #UrbanPlanning

Any Canadian urban planning nerds know why perimeter blocks are non-existent in Canada? I assume they're against zoning bylaws across the country, but has there been any experiments in building them? They solve so many problems, I don't understand why they are not the default form here. #urbanism #urbanplanning #TOpoli #ONpoli #CApoli

Urbanist Jeffery Tompkins argues that front porches are vital social infrastructure that fosters community and counters modern housing designs that inhibit neighborly interaction. He advocates to reintroduce usable porches to combat social isolation. https://www.thinkingbigbythinkingsmall.com/p/porches-as-social-infrastructure #urbanism #urbanplanning #FrontPorches #SocialInfrastructure #CommunityBuilding

📰 NC NEWS Asheville Unveils Riverfront Redesign 🏞️ After Tropical Storm Helene buried the French Broad River parks under debris and historic floodwaters, Asheville has introduced a unified five‑mile redesign. 🌊 The plan leans into nature‑based resilience, focused on flood‑adapted public spaces, restored wetlands, and improved river access. One welcome design element is the re-establishment of native rivercane to bolster riverbanks. 🧩 The project deploys climate‑aware infrastructure to strengthen habitats, recreation, and long‑term public safety. 🔗 https://www.ashevillenc.gov/news/city-of-asheville-introduces-unified-design-for-french-broad-riverfront-parks-recovery-project/ @NCConnect@fedigroups.social #AVL #Asheville #FrenchBroadRiver #ClimateResilience #UrbanPlanning #Parks #FloodAdaptation #Infrastructure #Environment #EcologicalRestoration
