This is what drivers in Edmonton think of speed limits, empowered by an Alberta government and MINISTER OF TRANSPORTATION of all people, who feel.the same way about speed limits (fitst restricting enforcement, then raising limits). This playground zone is of course where MY children play. From Strong Towns, a brief comment on a graphic going around social media showing the different priorities of Europe vs America when it comes to land use and transportation. Europe, which focuses on mass transit, has a dense, vibrant, and varied skyline, whereas the American equivalent is a couple of tall buildings being the only useful and productive spot, surrounded by a lot of wasted space in the form of parking lots. This was inspired by a toot I saw recently, but also by MANY posts I've seen over the years. If you wish to speak about disability and cycling, disability and urbanism, and you're not disabled in ways that affect your mobility, PLEASE engage diversely disabled people (who've not got a ton of internalized ableism, who've got experience cycling, taking public transit, driving, etc) instead of speaking in our stead. We're here. We're as hireable as other folks who speak at cycling/urbanism events. And we have lived experience of disability and cycling/transit/urbanism issues. Abled car-centric people use disabled people as a rhetorical cudgel, but so do abled cyclists/urbanists. Every single limited access highway in an urban area should be torn down and replaced with urban fabric and revitalization of our crumbling rail system, which is the single most important improvement to our public #transportation policy we could possibly make. #urbanism Not #HighSpeedRail, just fix the existing conventional rail system, and put back into service #railroad rights-of-way that have been unwisely abandoned.

For human civilization to survive this century, human civilization is going to have to condense its patterns of settlement into #urbanism. There is simply no rational way to debate this fact. Urban living is by far and away the most efficient way of living. Human civilizations of the past have abandoned settlements and infrastructure that was no longer supportable, and we will be no different. How are we going to pay for this? How did we pay for (looks around) any of what we already have?

You can get those services now, of course, but only at ruinous cost, because every shop has to pay thousands of dollars a month in rent on a high street. The ableism and survivorship bias in comments on yet another abled white male urbanist video saying that we don't need two stairways for a building and that having two stairways is the "big impediment" to building more affordable housing... Amazing how developers get abled white urbanist men to do their work for them. "We drove without seat belts and I'M okay. This along with those who claim immigrants, both documented and undocumented, are a drain on public services. Guess what? They ALL pay taxes, and the undocumented ones can't even receive any benefits from it! If Danielle Smith's referendum questions are brought to pass, then even the documented ones will be cut off from public healthcare, education, and supports... all while paying taxes like the rest of us! #biketooter #yegbike #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli #urbanism #yeg
