I'm proud to announce the launch of Blind Productions. Blind Productions is a showcase and community I built to celebrate blind creative professionals — musicians, DJs, actors, authors, podcasters, and content creators — and to give us one place to discover each other's work, collaborate, and connect. Here's the honest part: this is the ground floor. The doors are open, the foundation is built, and now it's time to fill it up. I'm inviting you to help shape what this becomes — a living archive that future generations can search to discover the musicians and creators who came before them, and a moderated space where we create, support one another, and network as a community. What's here today: • A searchable directory of blind creatives, each profile with a bio, links to their work, audio to listen to, and video to watch. • A moderated community forum for collaboration, support, opportunities, and networking. • Accessibility built in from the ground up — screen-reader friendly, fully keyboard operable, with adjustable text, themes, and high contrast on every page. So here's my ask: start submitting profile suggestions. Nominate yourself. Nominate the artists you admire. Bring the people who deserve to be found. Create a free account, join the conversation, and let's build something that lasts. This is how a legacy gets started — together. Explore and submit: https://blind.productions You must be 18 or older to join. #Accessibility #BlindCreatives #BlindMusicians #DisabilityInclusion #A11y #BlindCommunity #DisabilityAdvocacy #InclusiveDesign #AssistiveTechnology #ScreenReader #VisuallyImpaired #DigitalAccessibility #BlindArtists #DisabilityPride #InclusiveCommunity

"We're verifying that you are a human". How degrading is this sentence? It's CloudFlare's warning and it often happens you must complete a challenge. In this case a flag to check, in other cases it even gets worse - a captcha based on senses. Hearing and vision. And if you're impaired, you're simply screwed. It's more and more frequent due to the very high percentage of bots navigating the web, automated systems percentage has overcome humans and it's an evident statistic. We can't deny this. But I must share this fear: humans just click on the flag or overcome the challenge without even being aware of what the real meaning of "tell me you are a human" is. It can even cause internalized ableism. Humans with disabilities normalizing the fact to have mandatory certification of being humans. #a11y #ableism #accessibility #ai #blind #disability #human #inclusion #StayHuman #web

Curious what others have found here. I've heard Gumroad is not accessible, but I have not had any trouble with it myself. I want to sell my book. If not Gumroad, what platforms have you found accessible and easy to maintain? What I'm after: I upload a book, people can pre-order it, and as I update it readers get an email when new chapters come out. Recommendations welcome. #Accessibility #ScreenReader #SelfPublishing #IndieAuthor #WritingCommunity

Building a more accessible PHP ecosystem is something The PHP Foundation cares a great deal about. We are honored to share this post from guest blogger @menelion@dragonscave.space about what it's like to be a visually impaired PHP developer, learning and coding PHP. 💙 #php #accessibility #phpc https://thephp.foundation/blog/2026/06/16/php-through-a-screen-reader-small-syntax-choices-that-matter/

Since @media aural and @media speech are deprecated in CSS since at least Media Queries level 4:

What is the current preferred way to detect (preferably in CSS) when a user is using text-to-speech output so that document elements that have no relevance or can’t be rendered aurally can be hidden/skipped?

I’ve looked through the MQ4 media features list and don’t see anything relevant; but surely I can’t be the only one who wants to do this?

You need to be able to trust a screen reader the way you trust your eyes. A lot of people on Android right now are shipping software that makes that impossible, and calling it accessibility. https://fireborn.mataroa.blog/blog/stop-vibecoding-screen-readers/ #accessibility #Android #TalkBack #screenreader #blind #a11y #blog #writing #opinion

Hey, I’m reaching out to the #blind community here on Mastodon. I need your help in assisting a customer on my website who is blind. They’ve reached out to me via messages on Etsy, asking how tactile my fidgets are. They want to know if my fidgets (2 in particular, I can link you) are detailed enough for a visually impaired person to enjoy. I feel unqualified to answer this question without consulting others with lived experience. Further, I’m dyslexic and autistic, and worry that I might describe something inaccurately. They’ve requested I send them a highly detailed written description of what features can be tactically felt on the fidgets they want. I really want to help, but I’m unsure the best way to do this. Your help would be immensely appreciated. Thanks. 😊 #Accessibility

Re: flat web design. Buttons that don’t look like buttons. I blew someone’s mind today. She’s about my age, competent at her job, but not much into technology. She complained that she always needs to scroll past the weeks in her web-based calendar. I pressed the current date shown in the top-left corner above her appointments, which pulled up a big date overview by month. She was so excited, asked me how I did that. Mind you, the date was shown as simple black letters on a white background, with only a black, downwards-pointing chevron a bit to the right. It hardly suggested interactivity, especially to those not knowledgeable about web design. I often think that flat design was a mistake, and today’s situation was a good example of bad user experience (UX) stemming from non-intuitive controls. #UX #WebDesign #WebDev #accessibility

Your posts will get a lot more boosts if you include descriptions (alt texts) when posting images or other media attachments, because many people only boost media posts if there is a description. If you want help with adding descriptions to your posts, there's a guide here: ➡️ https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-make-posts-more-accessible-to-blind-people-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse The guide also answers lots of questions about alt texts. Let me know if there's anything missing! #FediTips #Accessibility

Recently, I have been thinking about how we could make the furry fandom more inclusive, specifically in terms of disabilities. It isn't to say that racialized, low-income, or queer people do not experience exclusionary attitudes within the fandom, but I feel more so attuned to ableism and ableist rhetoric. For one, I don't think it's enough to have disabled people in positions of power if the people in power aren't listening to the community, especially the voices of disabled furries in matters relating to access. I also find it frustrating when there is a lack of empathy or compassion shown towards victims of abuse within the fandom, or people experiencing a mental health crisis. Trained professionals or not, we could be better at showing up for people who are in need of someone to lean on. We also need to reconsider how and where and why we host events/meets. So many meets I have gone to were inaccessible. I shouldn't be an afterthought, but unfortunately, I am. This isn't meant to be a personal attack, I would love if we could all collaborate to build a more accessible fandom and that cannot be achieved if we just sit here fighting one another. #FurryFandom #Furry #Disability #Accessibility

This was invented for #AI. However, I'm finding it really nice for screen readers: RTK rewrites output from chatty terminal commands that produce a lot of output, often in complex tables, in order to make the output 80 to 90 percent shorter. Just put rtk in front of the command you want to compress. So "rtk git status" instead of "git status". And you can be sure the compacted output is correct because it's just using regular expressions and deterministic rules under the hood to rewrite output from the tools it knows about. If it doesn't know about a particular command, it just passes the output on unchanged. github.com/rtk-ai/rtk Now I've got to figure out how to wire this up in #bash so it'll just happen without me typing rtk all the time. #a11y #screenreader #accessibility #commandline

Went to Trader Joe's in DC today. Parked in a handicapped spot, got out with my cane, found the elevator broken — stairs only. Talked to store manager. No repair date. No alternative access plan. But I did get a "disabled customers are a priority." The ADA passed in 1990. Thirty-six years later and "have you tried the stairs?" is still a thing. 😤 #DC #DMV #Disability #Accessibility #DisabilityRights

Every now and then I like to remind people that one way to respond to the lack of alt text on images on here is to politely suggest text that can be copied. You never know if the person posting the image is dealing with physical or other challenges preventing them from writing the alt text. And some apps make this harder than others. One response to this that came up once or twice has been: then people will just be lazy and never do it themselves. Well, back to my first point, it may not just be laziness. But even then, so what? You'd be doing it for the people who rely on image descriptions, not them. #AltText #ImageDescription #accessibility #Alt4YouMeta

Ok I am truly sorry to be that guy. BUT: Can we PLEASE, leave the "#AI improves #accessibility" talks to people who actually benefit from #accessibility? I see SO MANY articles, On LinkedIn, on Slack, on Medium, about how AI improves #accessibility metrics, compliance, automates all the things. Newsflash: your metrics are likely incomplete or inconclusive, compliance is at best an illusory snapshot, and automation for #accessibility is still a pipe dream, and that's coming from someone who actually uses these tools OUTSIDE a presentation room. I don't care if you're #microsoft, #salesforce or whichever other big name that makes you feel authoritative. You're wrong, sorry to say. Want ACTUAL stories from ACTUAL people using #AI to improve #accessibility? Hire me and I'll talk your ear off. That's been me for months now. Don't want to, right before #GAAD? Welp ... that tells its own story then, doesn't it?

Want a freebie? Sure, I can do that!

  1. Can #AI improve accessibility on the web? - Yeah probably.
  2. Can it do it without supervision? - No. It almost habitually screws up the simplest of things because the training data is you lot’s semantically terrible code. :P
  3. Can it save time in making things accessible? - Yeah, provided someone competent is at the helm, see also q2.
  4. DO humans need to be in the loop? - yes, see q2.
  5. Are random big-tech officials making (generating?) 50-minute presentations to augment the echo chamber of this being a solved problem full of it? - That would be a yes.
  6. Are they actually causing harm by not actually including the audience they are claiming to help? - Absolutely, please stop f*ing doing that.
  7. Is this a terrible look near #GAAD where we need to convince others we care about #accessibility for one day of the year? - oh yeah.

Edit: Reboosting from November. Still looking for work. Thank you! So I lost my job yesterday, which means I'm looking to #GetFediHired! I've been a Senior Software Dev for ~8 years, but I've been programming for more than 20 years. I have lots of experience with C, C++, C#, Python, JS, x86 and other assembly. I've touched a lot of languages on several platforms. I have worked a bunch in simulation and robotics (ROS), open-source software, and 2D and 3D graphics. Hoping to work with interesting people on interesting projects. Diversity and accessibility are very important to me. Remote work is preferred. I am in Canada. Edit: Getting ahead of this now. No GenAI cultism please. No late-stage corpo ad-serving, data scraping, always online, crypto stuff either. Thank you in advance, I love you! :boost_requested: :boost_ok: :heart_cyber: #FediHired #RemoteWork #Accessibility
