Okie Fedi, I'm gonna be a bitch. My partner's neurodivergence makes it basically impossible for her to like, make alt text. She is also an artist and enjoys photography, but the Fedi's "no alt no like, no alt no boost" stuffs makes her feel excluded and less. And that's before the harassment and the smarmy reply guys "actually" her. Aside from the blatantly abelist stuffs, one super common response is that she should use Alt4Me to participate. Okie cool. A way to get help! But does it work? No. No it does not. I did a quick search of the Alt4Me hashtag. Of the 17 uses I saw in the last 5 days on mastodon.social: 11 posts got no help 3 posts got help 2 posts were telling ppl to use the hashtag 1 post was complaining abt ppl not using provided alts. Tbh? That is kind of fked. Fedi u aren't inclusive if u make systems to help ppl and u don't do the work to actually help. It makes it easier to say "lol we tried" IG, but it still leaves ppl without help... and IG gives preachy bullies another took to use to harass the ppl the tools are built for. I am on the hunt for a public domain image I can use, well, everywhere, and I was thinking about this picture. Don't ask me to write the texts for you please... I barely have the spoons to manage my own toots, and to remember to boost here... There are several good ways to get alt texts, like using altbot, or the hashtag #alt4me. I'm not trying to be mean with asking for alt texts, I'm trying to be inclusive to all gamers. I don't know who needs to hear this, but if you're yelling at a person on Fedi for not using #AltText, stop. Please. Should you use alt-text? Yes! Should you boost posts without alt-text? No! Should you yell at companies and bots who don't use alt-text? Fuck yeah! Should you try your best to make Fedi a more accessible, and safe place for everyone—including those who have trouble writing alt-text? Of course. Should you mention @altbot@fuzzies.wtf or #Alt4Me *occasionally* so folx know they're both wonderful tools that can help make Fedi a more inclusive place? It would be impolite not to. But—and let me make this clear—don't be a dick to folx who forget alt-text, or who have trouble writing it for whatever reason; it's not very punk of you.

I want to say it loud : don't ask for an #alt4me and take some time from a human being if you don't intend to update your message with the provided alt afterwards.
