Using an upright bike as "curb appeal", something I find VERY common for businesses in a number of countries. Here, the fake bike has pride of place near the entrance where ordinarily you'd put a cycle rack. This was inspired by a toot I saw recently, but also by MANY posts I've seen over the years. If you wish to speak about disability and cycling, disability and urbanism, and you're not disabled in ways that affect your mobility, PLEASE engage diversely disabled people (who've not got a ton of internalized ableism, who've got experience cycling, taking public transit, driving, etc) instead of speaking in our stead. We're here. We're as hireable as other folks who speak at cycling/urbanism events. And we have lived experience of disability and cycling/transit/urbanism issues. Abled car-centric people use disabled people as a rhetorical cudgel, but so do abled cyclists/urbanists. That headline makes it seem like a variation of what the callow traitors in DOGE said. They couldn't define what DEI was. They were afraid to say what they were actually acting on - anything that in any way mentioned or funded something studying some marginalized group. They would not outright say that the only group they considered meritorious was abled white men (and in this case, drivers of cars). They warped the meaning Black folks had given "woke" into some rallying cry for fragile white supremacists. Always interesting to see what stories media runs with. Headline anthropomorphizing the truck that crashed into a man, which made him thrust his child to safety and lose his foot and part of his leg to eventual amputation. You'd think they'd cover why a truck was driven into a family and who drove it, but no. Instead it's another inspiration porn story about disability. Every comment talking about his "great attitude" and no one questioning why & how a truck was driven into him. No reference to whatever (if any) coverage there was on the crash. #Ableism #CarCentrism #Media #Journalism #InspirationPorn
