Seeing a conference advertise itself using genAI trained on stolen works by creatives had me dashing off a passion toot because I know someone involved with this conference is getting paid and who gets paid and who doesn't is an issue.

But instead of me burning a conference I don't know all the financial planning details for, let me say:

If holding an in-person conference is so expensive you stiff artists whenever you can AND you have disabled and/or BIPOC volunteer to make things accessible

I've never been able to take a geology course so I can't ID this, but this type of stone is in many buildings in older parts of Bilbao and I assume this is some sort of fossilized sea creature of old...

Question:

I know that I am now reluctant to fill out a Google Form and that includes coming from researchers I trust. It's Google I don't trust with my data.

Do people know of ways to get forms and surveys up for free or a low cost that are based on servers in countries with reasonably low corruption governments? Servers hosted by companies with good ethics and privacy policies?

I just encountered something where they wanted my data and I wanted to give it, but opted not to. #AskFedi

@davidlohner You're welcome! And if they're looking for more tech independence - to not be at the whims of monopolistic multinational corporations, the Fediverse is also a good choice as long as one researches which instances to join. Or, even better, forms one's own servers, owned by the universities in question.

@davidlohner alt text & image description for accessibility. In fact, if you do this, it makes people MORE likely to boost your post. They also have the nice option here of using alt text/image description even for videos. All part of making communication, including science communication, more accessible. Which increases your educational reach as well as helps you (I have to really think about my botanical and chemistry terms when describing some images, for instance).

@davidlohner You will have more independence here in what you see of others and what you yourselves post. You can be a bit more listened to when it comes to shaping what the Fediverse becomes. Given how many institutions around the world are showing ethical problems and signs of other strains, it's exciting to possibly build new ways of doing things, including #SciComm Secondarily, I'd echo what others say about using a couple hashtags, I'd emphasize how important it is to learn how to create

@davidlohner investment in being here, in learning about others as much as talking here, then it is likely to be a failure. The reward is the same as the "punishment" - a lack of an algorithm. You will be able to communicate what you want as long as it doesn't violate your instance's rules. Unlike Facebook, Twitter, Tik Tok, etc., it's not hiding what you write (muting, blocking is an individual decision), but neither is it promoting it. Your community decides what it is interested in boosting.

@davidlohner Pardon me for answering this in English. One reason I think so many plant scientists went to Blue Sky over Mastodon was because they were not looking for a community, but looking for a broadcasting network. So I think the most important thing about #SciComm here is that other comm - community. This means investment in being here & building relationships. It means being part of building the community. So hashtags help, etc. but if the attitude is one of broadcasting without

It's good to remember there is no algorithm here and part of what that means is that boosting becomes that much more important.

I sometimes boost toots of things well outside my field, especially when they're about conferences, grad school opportunities, and events because I want those who are trying to get the word out to feel that the Fediverse is at least as good a place to do that as the billionaire-owned walled gardens are.

I would like more of them to establish here.

In the spirit of "you can't get what you don't ask for" and "trying to be more positive about online community just like the old days", I have an immodest proposal for kind Mastodonians in Spain, France, Germany, and other European countries I might pass through.

I start in València and need to move on starting March 30, eventually arriving in Freiburg im Breisgau on April 23, then back to Albania. I'm somewhat flexible about where I go in between using my Eurail pass.

It's a bit of a bummer that the Ig Nobels will be held in one of the most expensive cities in Europe...I suppose Zurich was picked for neutrality? I wonder if there are neutral countries with a cheaper cost to visit, though...

On the subject of having to change because of how hard it is for scholars to travel to and within the US, it is HIGH TIME that US-based professional societies hold creative accessible online events. Their disabled members have needed this for a long time...

There is no evolutionary signal suggesting that these viruses were being “pre-adapted” for humans prior to their outbreaks. Instead, measurable changes in selection typically appeared only after susta

People have studied authoritarianism and made lists of steps towards it. But I still haven't run across academics who've studied how just order comes out of chaos - what are the necessaries that make more just democracies arise and stick around, replacing authoritarianism, oligarchies, etc?
