🦌🦥🐴🐘🐪 For #FossilFriday — Megaloceros giganteus, the Irish elk, which I was able to visit in June. Specimen USNM 7051 is masterfully mounted at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. The mount features a massive steel armature to support its nearly 3.4–3.6 meter antler spread. Studies show Megaloceros dropped and regrew its antlers each year. . . #pleistocene #megalocerosgiganteus #paleontology #iceage #giantdeer #citizenscience Skull mount photos credit: NMNH/Loren Ybarrondo

Sharing a *real* mastodon on Mastodon (or selected replica parts thereof). These are shots from the Albert County Museum's new Hillsborough Mastodon display near where this 8-10 foot tall, 80,000 year old juvenile came to light back in 1936 #fossils #fossil #Mastodons #Pleistocene #paleontology #Palaeontology #museum #newbrunswick #Canada

It is exciting to see snippets of Surviving Earth coming out from Impossible Pictures (see: https://www.instagram.com/picturesimpossible/) One of the clips released features Arctodus, the "short faced bear", here is my official design sheet, which was used by the production team. #Art #Painting #PaleoArt #PalaeoArt #SciArt #SciComm #DigitalArt #Illustration #Palaeontology #Paleontology #SurvivingEarth #ImpossiblePictures #Arctodus #ShortFacedBear #TheDinosaurs #Dinosaurs

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🌍🧭 Researchers at the University of #Barcelona built a free web tool that converts current #fossil coordinates to where those locations sat millions of years ago. It runs five global plate tectonic models simultaneously and shows automated results nearly identical to desktop #software, with an average spatial error under 17 meters. 👉 https://scitechdaily.com/where-on-earth-was-this-fossil-200-million-years-ago/ #paleontology #platetectonics #paleogeography #universityofbarcelona #geology #map #science #earthscience #cretaceous
