The Yellow Milkmaid Syndrome. "The Milkmaid’, one of Johannes Vermeer's most famous pieces, depicts a scene of a woman quietly pouring milk into a bowl. During a survey the Rijksmuseum discovered that there were over 10,000 copies of the image on the internet—mostly poor, yellowish reproductions. As a result of all of these low-quality copies on the web, according to the Rijksmuseum, “people simply didn’t believe the postcards in our museum shop were showing the original painting. This was the trigger for us to put high-resolution images of the original work with open metadata on the web ourselves. Opening up our data is our best defence against the ‘yellow Milkmaid’." https://pro.europeana.eu/post/the-problem-of-the-yellow-milkmaid #art #collections #museum #openmuseum

V&A censored catalogues after demands by #China “Like the British #Museum, Tate & British Library, the V&A often uses Chinese printers because they produce catalogues at half the cost of #UK or European companies. They have to accede to censorship requests relating to any topics or images deemed sensitive by China, such as Buddhism, Taiwan, Tibet, Tiananmen Square and pro-democracy activities.” https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2026/apr/14/v-and-a-censored-catalogues-demands-chinese-printer

#fossil 📸 👉🏻 Inside the Natural History Museum in London, the skeleton of a Bradysaurus tells the story of how life first moved onto land. This early reptile represents a massive shift in history. To survive out of the water, it developed a strong skeleton to support its weight and waterproof skin to keep from drying out. It moved with a sprawling gait, using flexible wrist joints to navigate the terrain. Most importantly, it laid shelled eggs, allowing it to reproduce far away from the water. It is a humble-looking fossil, but it marks the very beginning of life on solid ground.
