There’s a river of molten rock flowing 1,400 miles below the Pacific Ocean in the Earth’s outer core, which is an important part of the planet’s magnetic field. Should we be concerned the river just changed directions? Read more from @sciencefocus@flipboard.com: https://flip.it/VqIZZd #Science #Earth #Geology

:boost_requested: Hey All - I know everything is terrible all at once, but I have a biggie for you to help us keep science not controlled by political state. Please help! https://www.science.org/content/article/white-house-seeks-tighten-political-oversight-grantmaking TLDR; Grants can be cancelled for any reason, at any time. Political appointees have a final say over what gets funded, and who gets funded. We would no longer allowed to use federal funding to publish, attend meetings, or talk to the public. We cannot collaborate internationally. This effectively kills all science and technology in the United States. Everything. Medical research, environment work, weather, you name it, it's over. ⚠️ TAKE ACTION! 40 days left to comment, can do it through stand up for science (I have not found the direct link yet, if someone else does please drop in comments, but this group is good and there is additional info on the page to help you write). https://fight2win.standupforscience.net/campaign/163675/ Comments need to be unique to be counted, so do not copy and paste something you see pre-written. Also contact your congressfolk / reps. You can use your same comment submitted to write them. #science #scientist #biology #chemistry #medicine #medical #research #geology #ecology #environment #health #action #directAction #policy #nature #technology

I wonder if anyone would be interested in a ground-up review of the 5 different fundamental stress equations that govern rock deformation in #Geology (faulting and folding) and how you can see they are actually all the same equation if you derive each from first principles.

Mexico City and surrounding areas were built atop an ancient lakebed — and it’s starting to show. A recent NASA satellite image reveals that the massive city is sinking at a rate of about 10 inches per year. “It’s a very big problem,” said Enrique Cabral, a researcher studying geophysics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. An active rift in the African continent has reached a “critical threshold” and will break apart soon. "We found that rifting in this zone is more advanced, and the crust is thinner, than anyone had recognized," says Christian Rowan, a geoscientist at Columbia University. Here’s more from @ScienceAlert@flipboard.com, including just how soon “soon” means: https://flip.it/0HeDb2 #Science #Africa #Geology #Earth #Nature

The geology of chocolate bars... It's more than 50 years since we left the Moon and, as far as I can see, we still have no equivalent for the prefix in the word 'Geology', the science of the physical structure of the Earth and its rocks. We have Exo-geology, and lunar geology and planetary geology but no xxxology where xxx is a prefix denoting the study of non-Earths. Who can help me out, here? #Science #Exoplanets #Geology https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/resources/project/describe-rocks-like-a-nasa-scientist/
