“ A #telescope in #Chile has captured evidence of the impact caused by part of a SpaceX #Falcon9 rocket slamming into the moon while travelling at 8,690km/h (5,400mph). The European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope observed “spectral lines” – a colourful illustration of the #sodium and #lithium gas – in the plume of #LunarDust stirred up by the impact. The #ESO telescope recorded these “chemical fingerprints” of the plume, which were visible for five to 10 minutes, the #observatory said. The #plume measured a few tens of kilometres in size, according to #CarlSchmidt, an astronomer from #BostonUniversity’s Center for #SpacePhysics.” #Moon

Zimbabwe's first plant to process clean-energy metal lithium — of which it is Africa's top producer — is up and running, a milestone in its expanding drive to stop the wholesale export of its raw mineral wealth. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2026/07/26/zimbabwe-lithium-ban/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #business #zimbabwe #mining #lithium #africa

#EU #Deutschland #Bayern #Gendorf #tozero #Recycling #Lithium #Batterie https://www.chemie.de/news/1188451/ein-wendepunkt-fuer-europas-rohstoffsouveraenitaet-tozero-startet-produktion-von-lithium-und-anderen-kritischen-rohstoffen.html

Japan has developed a method to recover up to 90% of lithium from used EV batteries "At the heart of the process is a clever chemical tweak; instead of using standard sodium hydroxide, the team swapped in recovered lithium hydroxide during recycling, which is a white powder. This helps convert battery waste, known as ‘black mass’, into high-purity lithium that can be reused in new batteries. Even better, the process isn’t just efficient, it’s better for the environment too, because researchers say it can cut carbon emissions by around 40 percent compared to conventional recycling techniques." https://tech.supercarblondie.com/japan-recovers-up-to-90-of-lithium-from-used-ev-batteries/ #Recycling #Energy #Lithium #Batteries #GreenEnergy #FossilFuels #Climate #ClimateDiary #CO2

it's interesting to see the first #sodium ion batteries show up on alie, they're still more expensive than lifepo4 right now, but they already have the advantage of working in low temperatures like -40C without any differences, having a decently high discharge rate (5S pulse and 20C continuous), and being intrinsically more stable and safe than anything with lithium .. tempted to get some and do some torture testing to see if they catch on fire or whatever if you stab them like with #lithium 🤔

The world’s first #EV with a #SodiumIon battery has landed – and it beats traditional #lithium batteries in one key way By Leon Poultney, published February 9, 2026 Cheaper sodium-ion batteries are rapidly becoming a reality Excerpt: "The battery technology, which has been developed by CATL (arguably the world’s largest manufacturer of EV batteries), has just finished winter testing in Inner Mongolia, where temperatures regularly drop well below what most EVs are designed to handle. "According to Gizmochina, the Nevo A06 was able to charge without issue at around -30°C (-22°F) and continued operating at temperatures as low as -50°C (-58°F)." https://www.techradar.com/vehicle-tech/hybrid-electric-vehicles/the-worlds-first-ev-with-a-sodium-ion-battery-has-landed-and-it-beats-traditional-lithium-batteries-in-one-key-way #SolarPunkSunday #SodiumIonBatteries #BrineBatteries
