Before-and-after images capture the crater and dust plume left by SpaceX rocket debris hitting the Moon https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/a-spacex-rocket-part-just-slammed-into-the-moon-creating-a-dust-plume-and-crater-heres-what-some-scientific-instruments-saw-180989299/ The Korea Aerospace Research Institute captured before-and-after images of the impact site, and a telescope in Chile detected signs of the plume. However, no one was able to watch the collision live #science #moon #spacex

A spent SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage hits the Moon — a warning shot for the cislunar debris problem https://www.universetoday.com/articles/spacex-junk-hits-the-moon-not-a-good-sign The spent upper stage from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket has struck the Moon, illustrating the hazard posed by debris in cislunar space. This problem will increase as launches to orbit and to the Moon… #science #spacejunk #moon

An authoritative source on the #Falcon9 crashing into the #moon. “ With the data I've seen as of 2026 August 1, I'm computing an impact on 2026 August 5 at 06:35:37.5 UTC (Universal Time), probably plus or minus a few seconds.” #ProjectPluto

A 2.43 kilometres per second lunar collision with the #moon 384400 km away. (0) #NASA trajectory calculations for free-return during #Apollo required a 3 body problem solution. How is the #Falcon9 trajectory by chance? Why? The seismic signature of lunar ice: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adz7220 -> By studying how seismic waves travel through frozen soil on Earth, a University of Maryland geophysicist helped develop a better way to detect water ice on the #moon—a critical resource for future astronauts and extended lunar missions: https://cmns.umd.edu/news-events/news/nicholas-schmerr-moonquakes-locate-lunar-ice

A discarded #SpaceX rocket is on a high-speed collision course with the #moon The rocket’s upper stage will unintentionally slam into the moon Wednesday, carving out a crater & sending up a plume of dust & rubble. #Space tracking expert Bill Gray predicts an impact of 5,400 mph—7X the speed of sound—near Einstein Crater. While scientists are not too concerned about this particular piece of #SpaceJunk, it highlights the growing threat as more & more items cram into orbit. https://apnews.com/article/spacex-rocket-moon-crash-512c4dd708b4cda1160d30b764f9fdb5

As much as *scientist me* would like to think this is cool, it is not cool. We are not only letting billionaires trash our planet, but also the interstellar space surrounding our planet. A dead SpaceX rocket will crash into the lunar surface at a super high rate of speed, causing a ejecta plume that will teach us about lunar subsurface geochemistry. But this is not a planned experiment. It is the result of an accident by a private company. It is unauthorized. And more and more stories will unfold like this, including the unauthorized brightening of our night sky, as we let these billionaires do whatever they want to our resources. Humbug! #SpaceTrash #SpaceX #moon #Musk #SpaceDebris #NightSky https://www.yahoo.com/news/science/articles/dead-spacex-rocket-slam-moon-173456998.html
