March 2015, and a frustrating morning spent trying to image the partial eclipse from our home in Fife.
I had a small success with a kitchen colander, but nothing I tried gave me a satisfying result. I went upstairs for a break and walked into my bedroom, where a crystal was hanging in the window.
Spread across the bedroom wall were lovely rainbow crescents, dozens of them.
For tomorrow, I have my telescope with a solar filter, so no worries!

My summer holiday is to chase the #solareclipse in Spain tomorrow with an RV.
I am in the North of Spain for heat reasons. My current thinking is to chase the center path of the totality for #solar #eclipse duration reasons.
#Luarca seems like a good spot but it's supposed to be a bit cloudy. The eclipse is relatively late so I need to take position on the sky into account as well.

Anyone traveling to #spain for the #eclipse that could pick up 2 ppl to share a ride. I can't disclose location here, and you would have to get in contact by sending a DM to establish a connection over simplex or signal to figure out if a fitting pickup location could be found.

Esto de la gente que se queda conforme con un 99% de #eclipse tiene el aspecto del modelo de Kübler-Ross de las cinco etapas de duelo.
Sobre todo la fase de la negociación: me he encontrado estos días a gente que vive en zonas a decenas de km tan solo de la totalidad que me vienen a decir que no puede haber tanta diferencia si su lugar está al 99,7%.
Pero sí la hay. Pongo aquí un gráfico semilogarítmico para ver cuántas veces más brillante que la corona es el fragmento de Sol que queda brillando cuando la Luna tapa un noventa y nueve con algo por ciento.
Incluso con un 99,9% de eclipse nos llega una luz más de 1000 veces más brillante que la corona.
Y eso es lo que nos la oculta, lo que hace que solo con la totalidad podamos verla.
No es negociable, no tiene remedio. Es la realidad de los eclipses.
Si llamamos R a la relación de brillo entre lo que manda la fotosfera y la corona (recordemos que la corona es 1 millón de veces má débil que el disco solar), en función del porcentaje de Sol eclipsado, al que podemos llamar E, la función es (para el final del eclipse nos vale la aproximación lineal):
R(E) = 1 000 000 -10 000 E
En efecto la pendiente es negativa (-10000) y la ordenada en el origen es un millón.
