A scale model of our solar system set into the tarmac of a path in Maryhill Park in Glasgow. The relative sizes of the planets are indicated by the size of the hole in the centre of each marker, while the distance between them is proportional to the real distances between the planets. Astronomers make for good office mates. We may accidentally zap you with an adaptive optics laser, but most of the time you'll just have to put up with us while we come up with silly acronyms for our projects. #astronomy https://www.newscientist.com/article/2528791-tom-gauld-on-the-worst-place-to-sit/

#DarkSideOfTheUniverse documentary is a fascinating look at dark matter and dark energy in the universe. Now I want to learn about #ParticlePhysics. #astronomy #physics #science

Our greatest window into the #universe is nearing completion. This soon-to-be #telescope is located at the top of Cerro #Armazones, the mountain that casts a triangular shadow. At 3046 metres above sea level, and with very dry conditions, the #ELT is in the perfect location for astronomical observations under one of the most pristine skies on Earth. Its dome, planned to be fully completed in 2027, protects the telescope and its sensitive components from the extreme desert environment, and from the Sun during daytime. At night, its two massive sliding doors will open to allow the telescope to observe the night sky, while still protecting it from the wind. #astronomy https://www.eso.org/public/images/potw2617a/

This is a hard one for me to catch, but I got lucky last month and was able to capture more data that I combined with some data from May 2025. Rho Ophiuchi is one of my favorite nebulae. It’s so colorful in broadband; no filters necessary. I wish it wasn’t so close to the horizon for me. #astronomy #astrophotography

Astronomers pin down the origins of a planetary odd couple New measurements of a hot Jupiter and its mini-Neptune companion suggest both planets formed surprisingly far away from their host star. by Jennifer Chu https://news.mit.edu/2026/astronomers-pin-down-origins-planetary-odd-couple-0505 astronomy at PG: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/bookshelf/101 #Books #Science #Astronomy

My new dream team is finally complete. The Harmonic Drive Mount Warpastron WD-20P paired with the Berlebach Astro Tripod UNI 18. Let the games begin — now all we need are clear skies. #astrophotography #stargazing #deepsky #astronomy #nightsky

#paperday on #astroph "The Impact of the Magnetised Cosmic Web on Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Propagation" by Allegra Firinu, myself and Carmelo Evoli. We investigated the role of realistic extragalactic magnetic fields in deflecting E>1e18eV cosmic rays, effectively creating "an horizon" beyond which particles cannot reach us, as they are trapped by magnetic fields. https://arxiv.org/abs/2605.02324 #cosmoMAG #astrophysics #astronomy #physics

Happy #MayThe4th ! Here's a photo I took at @esoastronomy@mastodon.social 's Paranal Observatory in #Chile, with one of our 8-m telescopes aiming its four lasers at the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small galaxy orbiting the Milky Way. The lasers excite sodium atoms high up in the atmosphere, creating artificial "stars" whose twinkle we can measure in real time to correct atmospheric turbulence and get super sharp images. This is how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_QC2cLroDc #StarWars #StarWarsDay #astronomy #space

Over 70% complete, our ELT is glowing in the #sunset light of the Atacama Desert in #Chile, surrounded by massive cranes hard at work to get this telescope up and running. With the first light planned for the end of the decade, the ELT and its groundbreaking 39-metre main mirror will take on some of the biggest challenges in #astronomy and, ultimately, help us understand our place in the #Universe.
