And our last question this week: Q8. It's already May! What did you see this week? Share a photo if you'd like. Cycling related or not is fine. Tell us about it! #BikeNiteQ #BikeNite #BikeTooter #Cycling #MastoBikes cc @bikenite@fedigroups.social

@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net @yantor3d@mas.to @ascentale@sfba.social @xtaran@chaos.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social I'm very happy with my SON dynamo and lights. I haven't had an issue with the dynamo hub in seven years. I've had the lights for two years now (had a different brand previously), and the combination is great. I set it on auto and never think about it (unless for whatever reason I want lights on and they haven't been triggered). It took some mental adjustment not to have a flashing rear light. There seems to be good research for not having the flashing. I've recently got a new helmet and I've added a small, flashing light to that, though. #BikeNite

@dgodon@mastodon.online @moira@mastodon.murkworks.net @yantor3d@mas.to @ascentale@sfba.social @xtaran@chaos.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social I was initially concerned about the drag, because I need all the help I can get. But it turns out I don't actually notice it. (I haven't done any A/B comparisons.) #BikeNite

@oheso@ieji.de @dgodon@mastodon.online @yantor3d@mas.to @ascentale@sfba.social @xtaran@chaos.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social Yeah the one I tried back when (I don't remember a model or anything) added _so much drag_, and also it felt grumbly. Terrible and definitely something you'd notice. I'm glad they are in fact actually better now ^_^ #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @xtaran@chaos.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1. Somewhere in Italy on a train. I have no experience with inductive. I think I prefer removable rechargeables. With built-ins I worry about what happens when the battery loses its ability to hold a charge as well. I like dynamos, but I haven't used them since the lumens got brighter. Otherwise, I might make them #1. On the coming recumbent, the light will be powered off the e-assist battery. #BikeNite

@meganL@mas.to @ascentale@sfba.social @xtaran@chaos.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1: they're usually pretty replaceable if you can solder. i've fixed a couple of monkeylights that way which is nice since monkeylights is gone but powered off the ebike batter is best, i'll be looking for that option on a cargo when I buy one eventually #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social #bikenite A1 I love my redshift pedals that I can slap into a usb port over the weekend and they blink on my pedals all week and they’re motion sensitive so I don’t have to turn them on and off.

@plactagonic@f.cz asks:

I just “sent order” for custom made full frame bag. *

Q7. Has anyone had any experience with custom made bike bags? Are they what you wanted or you would buy something off the shelf?

  • It is more a friend of a friend who does sawing for fun and reclames material from all over the place and it is first time she will do something like this.

@Amgine@mamot.fr asks about rolling resistance:

Q6.

  • Any lay-person resources to learn more?
  • Is larger diameter generally better?
  • Why is the standard #bicycle #wheel 700c / 26” ?
  • W/gyroscopic forces, the turning CoE moves forward of the wheel centre, even > r (e.g. the demise of delta motor trike.) Is this greater w/larger diameter?
  • Is this a factor in drive wheel vs steering wheel? I.e. if they must be different, which should be larger?

@ascentale@sfba.social @Amgine@mamot.fr @bikenite@fedigroups.social Someone made an incredibly niche website detailing rolling resistance for various tires: https://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/the-test not going to answer your theoretical questions, but very nice for figuring out what to buy (they also have a "puncture" test evaluation) #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @eq@mas.to @bikenite@fedigroups.social A5: Effetto Flowerpower (Liquid) Wax Chain Lube. 100% PFAS-free, biodegradeable, and Zero Friction will tell you it's the best liquid. I want to try some hot wax at some point but this is my gold standard to date. A little spendy compared to others, sure, but worth it. #BikeNite

It’s a May Day #BikeNite on Friday, May 1st!

Thanks for joining our chat. Anyone can join, now or later. Reply to what you like, and boost for visibility.

Our intro, & Q from @xtaran@chaos.social:

Q1. Where are you today? What power source do you prefer for bike lights & why?

  • Dynamo (hub, sidewall, etc)
  • built-in or separate case USB/rechargeable batteries
  • Exchangeable batteries (rechargeable/disposable)
  • Inductive always-on (Reelights, Magnic, etc.)

@ascentale@sfba.social @xtaran@chaos.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1. Posting from Beaverton, OR where it is very weather. It's supposed to be 90° F this Sunday. My e-bike has a hardwired headlight and taillight. I never have to remember to charge them, which is nice. For lights with their own battery, the bigger the battery, the better. Sadly, most bike lights have small 5V batteries that only last a few rides. That's why I made lights with 12V batteries that last all week. Never used a dynamo or always-on. #bikeNite

@yantor3d@mas.to @ascentale@sfba.social @xtaran@chaos.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1 continuance: I have used a dynamo, it was kind of... awful? But it was a while ago and modern ones are undoubtedly better (and I am 100% serious about that in part because of supercapacitors and LEDs) and I'm actually curious now about how much less they might suck, or if they're even actually good because that'd be neat. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A8. Heard my first Cuckoo of Spring (landmark moment in the year) while out on the mountain bike in Thetford forest. Hard work on the sandy surfaces in places with a few treacherous little pine cones that act like ball bearings. I do like the art installation at the visitors centre that shows the layers of geology and human activity. This place has been lived in for a *long* time. #bikenite
