@ascentale@sfba.social A8: went for a DIY #audax this week and it happened there was a ford at pretty much the half point. Now I am pounding on designing a route with many fords but looks like it will be difficult. Anyway early days @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @pete@masto.hypertelia.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social A5. Nothing currently out of action, but a few years ago, my cyclo-cross bike was out of action for around six weeks in the midst of the season. I tore off the rear mech in a race, trashing it and the mech hanger in the process. It's an unfortunately typical cyclo-cross occurrence. The delay was caused by a shop's inability to order the correct replacement hanger. This was the shop that sold me the bike, so no excuse for ordering the wrong one more than once. After that, I bought a second cyclo-cross bike to cover such eventualities in the future. And typically, since then I have never needed that bike as a back-up! #BikeNite #Cycling #CycloCross

  1. Provide factual research reports to business owners which overwhelmingly show that store footfall (both casual and regular) increase when multimodal (especially walking cycling) transport is privileged over car based

  2. Info packs to all business owners about cycle specific infrastructure. Both for their own premises (IE wheel bender racks are very much not preferred) and the space outside (encroaching onto paths is a big no)

I have no idea how to address this with the businesses.

One "make your demographic visible" hint I've seen is to walk through the store with your helmet (rather than locking it outside) so it's clear there are money-spending customers arriving by bike. This of course works best when the people in the store seeing the customers also make design decisions, and not an absentee owner 2 continents over.

@streetmeme@cycle.town asks: Q7. How can small businesses build a clientele with diverse transportation modes? Some business owners oppose bike lanes, bus lanes, and street safety improvements; some claim that the loss of parking will be fatal for their business, despite studies showing that business activity generally increases after such projects. Given that urban street design philosophy in many US cities is finally prioritizing safety and multimodal transportation, what can businesses do to prepare for that future? (Relatedly, what good outreach can be done by people who cycle to preemptively address these fear of losing business?) #BikeNiteQ #BikeNite #BikeTooter #Cycling #MastoBikes cc @bikenite@fedigroups.social

@ascentale@sfba.social @streetmeme@cycle.town @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite A7: It is sometimes suggested to remove your cycling helmet before entering a business. But maybe, wearing one while patronizing a business due to be "affected" by new bicycle infrastructure might be helpful in reminding the owner that cyclists are customers too.

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A8. These were 180 degrees from one another so I could not fit it into one shot. Using an upright bike as "curb appeal", something I find VERY common for businesses in a number of countries. Here, the fake bike has pride of place near the entrance where ordinarily you'd put a cycle rack. To the other side, you see what infrastructure there is for parking actual non-decorative upright bikes. #CarCentrism #CycleParkingAudit #BikeNite

As @ajft@aus.social says, get thee to the physio it really does work. I had a titanium plate and several screws in my collarbone for a year thanks to a motorcycle accident, and got it removed and have 99% movement back now thanks to physio :-) The right exercises, eat well, listen to your body, all that crap :-)

Welcome to #BikeNite on Friday, August 7th. Thanks for joining our chat. Anyone can join, now or later. Reply to what you like, and boost for visibility. Our intro and question from @FourT4@mastodonapp.uk Q1a. Where are you posting from today? Q1b. Have you booted a tire before (as in put a barrier/patch inside your tire casing to prevent an inner tube from bulging through)? Is this a temporary fix, or can it last the life of the tire? #BikeNiteQ #BikeTooter @bikenite@fedigroups.social

@ascentale@sfba.social @FourT4@mastodonapp.uk @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1. Home in Rome, as ever. And no, I have never booted a tyre. In fact, before coming here, I had not been aware of the practice. Most of my punctures have not involved large cuts to the tyre, so it never seemed necessary. But at least now I know what to do if I have to. #bikenite

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite #BikeTooter A8 I saw a family of Wild Boar 🐗. They looked just like they should (IE like the Asterix books). Missed the photo. Also did a proper night ride (starting at midnight) after a ferry delay made me miss last train from South coast to London. Very interesting and mind expanding experience. To be recommended. Also was in Southern Europe for heatwave. Below was the direct sunlight temperature - the shade temperature given by meteofrance was 41
