Keeping the pedals spinning at 60-90 rpms helps keep my knees from hurting unless they were bothering me earlier. Just mashing up a hill always makes me feel worse without it actually being any faster. The extra strain probably does go through your knees doing that. Foot position could also contribute I'd wager, and I do find myself moving my feet around sometimes. #BikeNite

@benjamingeer@piaille.fr @triploidtree@mastodon.ie Yea, common brand name in the US is Mosquito Dunks, but it's basically a puck you put some (or all of) in standing water regularly and it pretty much only targets mosquito larvae.

Concrete will tear up the handlebars and stea, but it's not too bad. A4b. I haven't (I think), but I assume it's like tubeless sealant. It's pretty common to fill tubes with sealant in New Mexico where goat heads (plant seed) will give you flats regularly, but it can make a mess. #BikeNite

Style... something built for bike packing, probably the more loaded variety. It'd be too heavy for a lot of rides, but I'm a utility cyclist first and foremost. I've gotta lug kids around regularly hence the need. #BikeNite

Best answer I can say is to get involved with the school's admin to help organize. If they're not helpful, though, it'll just be a carpool but with bikes, so liability can't really be more than a carpool, no? In any case, best to try to work with the school rather than around them since it is school related and they can help get the word out. #BikeNite

If it's hot, I usually try to make sure I have some kind of sport drink with me instead of just water. I've been meaning to get some water crystals (e.g. MiracleGro) to put together a cooling neck scarf/wrap. You just need a cotton bandana (or thereabouts) and about a tablespoon or two of water crystals each. They really do help cool you off. #BikeNite

@ifixcoinops@retro.social Most crafts are fairly similar. Sure, fancy scroll work and the like is nice in woodworking, but claw feet get kind of dull regardless of skill. At the end of the day, EVERYTHING in woodworking is either a platform or a box (or a wombo combo platform on a box or vice versa). You don't need claw feet to make a functional (and even pretty!) boxform. And let's face it, all programs are either paper forms or board games. But they'd all mostly be better on paper/cardboard.

I generally have pretty good mental health, but I always have this little anxiety demon whispering in my ear that folks don't actually like me and just accept me as a necessary ride along for access to some-one/-thing else. I know it's not true, but god damn does the anxiety demon whisper loud at the worst times.

Hat tip to @ifixcoinops@retro.social for the trick of shoving toothpicks in wallered out screw holes to revitalize them without replacing any wood or going up a size in screw. Fixed our laundry door that had the leans real bad in minutes.

@mikemcquaid@mastodon.social @penguin42@mastodon.org.uk Mileage may vary here a lot. Lots of employers won't negotiate knowing they have a wide pool that won't argue (maybe if you're already a prolific contributor they'll make a limited carve out). The better, more durable route is to unionize the industry to outright end these kinds of employment clauses and allow time allotments for FLOSS library/tool maintenance.

@stux I spent a few days last week determining how to best abuse FasterXML's Jackson to convert a flat JSON structure to a very different list of structured objects based on the field name (another custom annotation to indicate a setter method and a few hundo annotations, and a configured ValueInstantiator to build the structure from a value and the deser context). Sure, there's POJO to POJO mapping, but that sucks and is way more code to maintain than just deserializing directly into our types.
