And complained to the city. Eventually (2-3 yrs) they brought in pavement grinding equipment to more or less flatten it.

However, like all tricky things, how do you define stupid? I.e. people can vote yes, no, stupid, perhaps? With a high threshold of 75% or something like that.

For example, the watch on your wrist is more accurate than the clock on the wall, because your body maintains a pretty constant temperature. You can buy temperature stabilized oscillators - they come with sensors and heaters built in.

@snep@y.diskcat.com @tylersticka@social.lol looks to me like a jst-zh connector, but the photo is blurry. JST makes a lot of connectors, it takes a bit of searching to find the right match. If you need a connector to add to an existing thing, I recommend salvaging the existing connector and solder wire, or buy 10 jumper/extension cables for $5 on eBay or Amazon. Crimping these well is impossible without the $200 crimped.

Once you start, you must never stop, so it’s a permanent ongoing cost, not a one-time thing, because there are always New thieves. Stopping all local thieves means they’ll instead drive in from out-of-town. Let’s say you add trackers, well then they’ll start using shielded (all metal) boxes to hold the bikes in until they can part it out and destroy the trackers. Every bit of this happens today with cars. Amsterdam has a huge theft problem.

Instead, my existing DNS records were not copied over, I had to ask support to do it (months after the move). Despite editing my DNS records in hover, 6 mo later whois still says served by enom. Support is SLOW; the site took 30s to load each page, and days to get a response. As a paying customer (and with customers that I answer to) this is unacceptable. I've mostly moved to porkbun.com.

@yantor3d Vancouver I think a few years back instituted a new default of allowing increased density near existing transit; SFH -> 8 apartments. a ton of infill has happened, and while there's currently blowback, proves that if you allow it, they will come! You don't need to build new transit, you just need to add more riders.

Ignoring efficiency loss (~50%) that's 10 hours of pedaling to charge an EV to drive 3 miles. So no, it's not practical to charge a car with a bicycle generator. Instead, 100W on a bicycle at 15 mph for 10 hours can take you 150 miles (in my experience, more like 100 mi due to stops). 150/3 is at least 50 times more efficient.

@kelidanovus @liquidlamp V2L is enough for most emergency uses. A fridge uses about 1 kwh per day. A car has 50-200 kwh, so it will run your fridge for weeks to months! Longer still when you recharge at the nearest still functioning charger. Of course the challenge is what happens when you need to drive to work etc for an extended amount of time: but a $500 USD 1 kwh portable battery can pick up the slack. However, pay attention to recharge time! Some take 12 hours or more!

@gwagner in the California Bay area, mild climate. My monthly energy bill went from $200 in gas to $50 in electricity during the cold winter months. And we use it way more, too (i.e. way more comfortable; fewer sweaters and blankets and less shivering), since we can heat or cool just one room at a time, vs burning 1 therm/hr to heat two humans and a cat. Also, now this is the first time I've ever lived with a cooling system. Bonus: free midday cooling in summer thanks to rooftop PV solar panels.

Google’s Takeout is notorious for missing the occasional photo! E.g. Amazon doesn’t even offer a bulk download feature (file a support ticket!). Keep growing your list: Bank (default is to keep for 18 months? Boo!), utility company (I have usage data for >20 years), phone call history (I keep 10 yrs for business taxes), and more.

@swetland It depends on whether you are talking about compiling for local use or cross compiling hermetically/reproducibly for use on another machine? The former is easy. The latter...depends on how good you want it. As a full time build and release engineer, there's a lot of middle ground to half-ass it and have it mostly work. Truly hermetic, while retaining performance, is not conceptually difficult, but just like writing threads, it's very exacting.
