Cranky old man with a series of ethnic backgrounds of miscellaneous sort. Poet and painter, mainly and overall, anything else for the sake of paying bills, so, landscaper, gardener, jack of all trades. Hello all.

A couple of hours at the allotment, watered stuff, plucked some weeds, dug the drain channel and while at it, spotted a frog! Also a new strawberries crop seems to be growing... And the grape isn't ready, perhaps in October. Left the track camera over a couple of days, at the allotment, had some 300 shots, most of them pointless, vegetation agitated by wind, but got a few bird shots including this crow taking off. #photography #crows #allotment #pond #enviroment #grape #frog #strawberries

No hose ban here... yet... been to the plot. 9 till 1130, watered the lot, plucked weeds, trimmed the olive and the Hazel bush, pulled up broadbeans and planted spuds. Spuds found dumped, a dozen of them, in the general compost heap, with rootlets so, yeah, why not. Testing a tarpaulin for leaks in view of using a tub as a pond, rather, pond already there but it dries out, ideally placing the tub in it so as to keep water during dry months. Will report. #allotment #gardening #potatoes #weeds #olive #broadbeans #pond

Plotter asked me to do her plot, OK.

One hour cutting very high and thick grasses of various sorts, including hogweed which I spotted before hitting it so ok.

Large bin full of stuff, mostly charcoal which I will recover. Also a large spider, as in photo, no idea what sort but that white cross and the size made me fidgety so let it be.

Am now wondering... can't remember if it was here I read that buttercup flowers are no good for pollinators, including bees... now... if that is the case, and there being several score buttercups at the plot, have seen ONE bee, two mosquitos and a fly, over a few weeks, am extrapolating that buttercups could be emanating some noxious chemical which keeps pollinators away, so... what if.. I chop off all the buttercups, leaving marigolds, dandelions and the pollinator friendly blue/purple flowers such as marsh lily and bee lily?

Only one way to find out. will decapitate buttercups.

will report.

Duh! I ask you! Donned all wet gear, went to the plot and... it stopped raining. Bah!

Two hours trimming the plot and adjacent area, this one to get rid of all yellow flowers, on the grounds that they are presumably not bee-friendly, so went around slowly carefully to keep lillies and orchids which are bee-friendly. So far so good but haven't finished, more tomorrow.

Phew!

Have a wheel barrow with one broken handle. The thought occurred that, once I've removed the holding bolts attaching the plastic container to the metal frame... I should be able to replace a bike trailer container. It's a smallish milk crate, will measure the distance and if it fits will do it. Mind you the barrow's bolts are truly rusted and spin around, without coming off. Will report. #photography #smartphone #cycling #trailer #wheelbarrow #RepairReuseRecycle

Am using 'Plantnet' app, good enough for me. Today spent half an hour in the field taking shots and feeding them to the app with the following results:

Tall yarrow
Small white clover

Wild parsnip

Red osier dogwood

Bee orchid

Meadow buttercup

undetermined species

Oriental iris

common dandelion

Owl head clover

Broad leaved marsh orchid

creeping cinquefoil

creeping buttercup

oak seedlings (bird drops - 3 of them)

a few more to identify. Some are natives, a few are undetermined species so will have to try again tomorrow

Will report.

Am having an argument with a female blackbird... it plunders my strawberries sneaking under the net! Which being old has some gaps.

Feels like it waits for me to show up , gets in through a hole and pecks away, as I approach it goes in and exits by another hole... grrr...

Maybe does it for fun as I left a few plants outside and she just won't have them...

Had one hour trimming session under rain and wind, going carefully around marsh lillies and marsh orchids, and not very close to the ground to avoid chopping frogs and toads.

Yesterday heard, clearly, a toad. In a few days I'll trim it some more.

RE: @euronews@flipboard.com

Here's a paranoiac corporate stooge trying to frighten us; Hardly anyone realizes that if China is producing an awful lot of stuff we use is because EU/US companies have sold them the contracts to do that, they didn't steal anything or forced us to do so.

Been to the plot earlier, too hot to do anything other than water the crops and sit under the plum tree. Stuff is growing OK: broad beans already harvested and donated to the food bank, strawberries well gone down my gullet - had a week of top posh breakfast, strawbs in buffalo milk yogurt.... Onions arising, tomatoes flowering, pinto beans trying the escape the greenhouse through gaps in the roof, carrots also coming up nicely though last year's have flowered so let them be for insects. Grapes and olives also showing up nicely, dunno if the olives will ripen, grapes yes, they will, not enough to make wine but am sure I'll have some decent breakfast, sometime in October. Am preparing some home made pesto using basil and garlic from the plot, olive oil, a quarter bag of almonds, pinch of salt, splash of chili sauce, no cheese. #allotment #gardening #garlic #basil #oliveoil #salt #chili #onions #tomatoes #smartphone #photography

Phew! well self-deserved respiratory relaxation output... er... sun's must have done my brain in, feels like a boiled egg lol! But apart from silly jokes, am just now returned to base after a round ride of some 22/25 miles thusly: Royal Oak, Cardiff, through the Docks, up the flyover to the Merry Harrier, left then right and through Cosmeston lakes park, which is quite nice. Made it to Sully - took one hour - and was disappointed as there was no market, closed, I wonder if it has given up free trade as it used to be. Don't know. Returned via a different route, through Swanbridge, up the road to Lavernock, down a bit then left on to the footpath, which shows severe signs of erosion. Made it Penarth where I stopped half an hour and had a fantastic sight never ever seen before! swimmers! in the Severn!! swimming under the pier! lucky for the the tide still had one hour rising time, or else they might have been swiped out to sea, and found nevermore; the current here is and can be ferocious. Anyway, back on the return leg, up hill through the park, in Penarth, to the roundabout, took right, up some more to the very top of the hill, just over is the sea cadets place, then down... down down down quite fast even by applying the brakes which by now might be worn out. Anyway made it to the Barrage, cross over that, through Splott, along the railway then, stopped ten minutes at the Portuguese shop, bought a couple of victuals. proceeded to the Asian shop to buy bread and a 3 Kg of red melon, delicious, a quarter of which is now resting in the fridge. Left at 0753, returned at 12.03. not bad for an old man. Innit?

Meanwhile at the pot... needs a good seeing to re weeds around it and within; it's the horsetails and creepy willow that does it for me. Will have to use the trimmer either early in the morning or late afternoon due to heat, last year used it such conditions and the motor seized. the giant courgette is a donation, from another plot, this one will be donated to a food bank or someone else as it does not fit in my fridge and I already have four normal ones. The cauliflower is mine, will be self served for dinner tonight. On the way back while cycling, a weird noises cropped up, stopped, found a large screw stuck in the front tire. damn! if I remove it it will deflate and I''l go walkies, or else, leave it till later... #allotment #courgette #cauliflower #photography #dinner #outdoors #cycling #smartphonephotography

Am... am flabbergasted.... b TWICE in less than a year... two plotters.. asked me what are blackberries for!! good grief!! one, an immigrant, was amazed when I told him they're edible and delicious, he made a disgusted face.... the other a local with the plot right next to mine, also asked what are they for. I said they're edible and delicious and grown all around you; offered one fruit from a box I'd just filled in from the nearby bushes, she made a face and refused. Goodness gracious me. I rest my case. Am not telling them am having a handful of them in goat yogurt, for breakfast, lest they run away in fright. #allotment #blackberries #food #fruits

@nuwagaba2@mastodon.social Feel free to do so; my plot produces a decent amount of stuff such as pinto and butter beans - broadbeans (lot donated to the local foodbank) strawberries in quantities - had them all ,over a month of breakfasts lol!) have potatoes and garlic on the go and can't wait till september for the grapes! not enough to make wine though... also at least one medicinal herb, wild.
