After 15 years with us, Chewbacca (usually shortened to “bacca”, not “chewie”) died yesterday. We’ve known since last fall that he didn’t have much time left. I’m glad he made it to summer, though, so he could go outside and find a peaceful shady place to lie down for the last time. He may have been the best cat I’ve ever owned. When my kids were little, they would manhandle him and he never got mad or scratched them. He was incredibly friendly, but also a big clumsy goofball. #catsofmastodon
@samlitzinger@journa.host I'm not really surprised. There are just as many Trump signs/flags/etc as ever. Yesterday in Maine there was a pro-ICE rally, though it was notably smaller than the anti-ICE rallies. And of course, read the comments on any mainstream news article and you'll see lots of Trump support. I think he's reached the floor of his support. Those still attached to his worldview are there for life.

@arstechnica@mastodon.social A lot of people aren't going to like this, but I think it's potentially interesting. One of the fundamental issues with today's "AI" rollout is how centralized it is with a few extremely large players, most of which have dubious records with regard to abuse of their positions.
The big questions here are how these models are trained. What data goes into the training and how was it obtained? Decentralized inference is not interesting if the training is still centralized and opaque.
Really sad to learn that Hampshire College will be shutting down. It was my first choice in colleges, way back in the 90’s, but I couldn’t make the finances work. I would have loved to go there. @mdione There’s a decent amount of programability in the electronic shifting. You can change the behavior of the various shifter buttons, can pair additional wireless shifters (e.g. to place shifter buttons in different positions on the handlebar, etc). So the functionality is all highly software defined. It works very well, and installation of a derailleur becomes trivial when there’s no cable to install. But it still makes me cry.

As to what's left of America after this period, it's anybody's guess. As an American, it's incredibly sad and scary to watch all of this.

@AndresFreundTec@mastodon.social Indeed; I mis-read your oss-security post early on and thought that 5.6.1 was the one that introduced the actual backdoor, while only the framework for it had been introduced in earlier versions. It may have been the "Note that the files were not even used for any "tests" in 5.6.0." sentence that threw me off.

@corbet This concern was even called out during the ingestion process for the backdoored version. https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1067708#27 The fact that the upload was being performed by one of the upstream contributors no doubt went a long way toward assuaging those concerns at the time.
