So, just got an email from Springer saying that they sold Scientific American to a to me obscure LabX Media Group. 1) I hope they won’t enshittify it. 2) does anyone know LabX Media Group and has any kind of insight or opinion on them? #scientificamerican #sciam #science #sciencecommunication

Hello! I’m on the lookout for #freelance #writing opportunities for @sci_burst@mastodon.social 💜 We currently do a bit of work in this space with Curious Minds - Girls in STEM, Refraction Media’s Careers with STEM #magazine, and a few other places. Keen to broaden our reach and write more on science in #PopCulture, sustainable futures and #solarpunk, and #ScienceCommunication. Please let me know if you’re aware of any aligned opportunities, big or small! 🫶🫶 💌 hello@sci-burst.com.au 💌 #scicomm

HELIOX: WHERE EVIDENCE MEETS EMPATHY 🇨🇦 🧬 Hunting Disease X Beneath Our Streets Jul 4, 2026 • 1:06:44 56% of the genetic material in raw city wastewater is biologically unknown. Scientists just catalogued 17,000 previously undiscovered viruses from it — and they may hold the cure for antibiotic-resistant superbugs. This episode explores the CASPER Consortium's Wastewater Virome Database, the ethics of biological surveillance, and the stunning possibility that the next great medicine is already flowing beneath our feet. No, it couldn't. This is a clickbait headline telling people what they like to hear, but that is not even supported by the article. Alcohol is never healthy. People can make their own choices, but should not fool themselves. Poor #sciencecommunication from a source that should know better. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvglqw709k1o

I find the use of such pseudoprecise numbers for the most rough estimates always disturbing, not least because they suggest a level of precision that does not exist and that taints the public discourse, because many people take them at face value without grasping the underlying limitations and uncertainties. #sciencecommunication #science #sciencefiction https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adz1187
