Joe Pye weed (Eutrochium maculatum) But who is Joe Pye? It seems to be the anglophone name of a very interesting Mohican, Joseph Shauquethqueat, living at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Massachusetts and New York. Not clear he had anything to do with the plant, maybe only by association. A scholarly article about botany, history and First Nations, with Latin names and a critical eye. Team activities on August 5, 2026. 1. Harvest and wash elderberries in the pleasant conditions. 2. Observe a variety of pollinators on the native plants, the painted lady butterflies are numerous. 3. Plant more native plant starts as the existing plants bloom. #Wildflowers #NativePlants #Iowa Another walk over to the pond. If I keep this up, I can revive the #DailyWalk hashtag. In addition to the wildflowers by the pond and in the Hillside Prairie, I also saw frogs, damsel flies, monarch butterflies, and a great blue heron.

Cool and uncommon fern called a moonwort. They spend most of their lives fully underground, in symbiotic relationships with mycorrhiza. They pop up a frond every once in a while for a photosynthesis treat. #ferns #fronds #pnw #nativePlants #moonwort #botrychium

PLANT SEX! Clematis lasiantha (Pipestem Clematis) has separate male and female flowers. In this photo are the male flowers, with many pollen-producing free stamens. The counterpart are the pistillate (female) flowers (not in the photo). Meet Eriodictyon parryi, aka Poodle-Dog Bush. Pretty, but touching the leaf or stem of this plant will cause severe skin irritation and unfortunately, the inflorescence (flower) looks very similar to other plants also in the Eriodyction genus. Solanum americanum (American Black, Common, Small Flowered or White Nightshade) is an herb in the nightshade family (Solanaceae) that can be annual or perennial. Photographed near Ramona in San Diego County, California in May 2022. The two common names American Black Nightshade and White Nightshade might contradict each other. The first pic shows the shadow of a head-down bee through the leaf of a cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum). As the name describes, the leaves attach completely around the stem, creating a large rain-holding cup on this large plant. I wonder if this aids flying creatures and thwarts walking ones? We haven't had rain for a while, and I leave water saucers out but maybe I'll fill some of these natural pockets too. #NativePlants #NorthernIllinois #gardening #pollinators

#AmericanIndian #CulturalGarden opens on campus May 27, 2025 "#NCBG, #AIC, and University staff cut the ribbon on the new American Indian Cultural Garden on campus. Photo by Joshua Chorman. "In late April, North Carolina Botanical Garden staff joined students and staff from the American Indian Center (AIC) at #UNC to celebrate the grand opening of the American Indian Cultural Garden on campus. "Created through a partnership between the AIC and the Garden over several years, the American Indian Cultural Garden features culturally-important food crops and #NativePlants. It also contains hardscape features like a medicine wheel and ceremonial circle with a fire pit, where Native students will be able to gather. "Located across the street from the AIC and wrapping around the #CarolinaCommunityGarden, the new garden serves as a space to celebrate American Indian cultures and Indigenous ecological knowledge, support American Indian students in adjusting to life on campus, and serve as a teaching tool for the greater community. All are welcome: it’s open to the public from dawn to dusk. "Dan Stern, NCBG director of horticulture, served as the project manager for the construction of the American Indian Cultural Garden.
