Five days past Lughnasadh, and the land is showing it. Goldenrod cracking open along the highway shoulders. Elderberries turning from green to blood-dark. The first joe-pye weed standing purple and shoulder-high in the ditches. The Perseids already scratching the northeast sky, building toward the peak. The light leaves a few minutes earlier each evening now, so slightly that you feel it in your shoulders before you see it in the sky — the way you always know a room has emptied before you turn to look. *Tha an talamh a' cumail cunntais.* The earth keeps the count. It was counting before there was anyone here to argue about what the count meant. Fairies of Northern Appalachia is OUT NOW! I’m so excited to say that “Fairies of Northern Appalachia: A History of the Little People of the Mountains” is out everywhere now. The book collects old and new folklore from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, eastern Ohio, Virginia, eastern Kentucky, and western Maryland. It features Pennsylvania Dutch, Scots Irish, Irish, and Cornish traditions, among others. Here you’ll find stories about banshees, tommyknockers, gnomes, mountain dwarves, household spirits, wassernixen, fairy queens, fairy witches, Appalachian pygmies, and arrow-shooting elves. The painting on the cover is “The Fairy Favourite” by John Anster Fitzgerald, which I thought perfectly captured the strangeness and diversity of Appalachian fairies. The carving on the back cover is by artist Joan Reed. You can find it at your local bookstore or at Amazon. In Greek mythology, the witch Medea falls in love with the hero Jason and helps him win the Golden Fleece. Though the two marry and produce two sons, Jason later abandons Medea to marry the princess of Corinth. In Greek mythology, when Zeus and his brothers freed the Cyclopses, they each received a magical item in thanks. Zeus got thunderbolts, Poseidon got a trident, and Hades got a helmet of invisibility. Herne the Hunter is mentioned in William Shakespeare's play "The Merry Wives of Windsor" as the ghost of a gamekeeper who has antlers and haunts Windsor Forest. The manticore is a man-eating monster of Persian and European folklore that resembles a lion with a human head, shark teeth, and a tail full of poisonous spines. Despite the manticore's human features, its intelligence is that of an animal. The Welsh Arthurian knight Owain had a special bond with wild beasts. He commanded 300 magical size-changing ravens, and his most loyal companion was a black lion he had saved from a giant serpent. In Welsh folklore, Bedwyr (Bedivere) is one of King Arthur's two best friends, and one of his best warriors (despite being one-handed).
