One of my favorite #Roman objects: World's oldest known "Swiss army knife", including a hinged knife, fork, spoon, spike, prick, sieve, spatula. Unfortunately, there is no provenance of this multi-tool, but it’s not a unique item: There are a few more examples, e.g. one was found in a Roman tomb in Albintimilium, Italy, dating 2nd/3rd century AD. 📷Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge #archaeology #romanarchaeology

In Greek mythology, the witch Medea falls in love with the hero Jason and helps him win the Golden Fleece. Though the two marry and produce two sons, Jason later abandons Medea to marry the princess of Corinth. Grund dafür war die Veröffentlichung einer politisch-satirischen Streitschrift. Anstelle von Steinen bewarfen ihn die Menschen jedoch mit Blumen. Defoes berühmtestes Buch, Robinson Crusoe (1719), wurde – abgesehen von der Bibel – häufiger übersetzt als jedes andere Buch der Geschichte. Er verfasste außerdem Moll Flanders und Ein Tagebuch eines Pestjahres. Im Jahr 1702 starb Wilhelm III. Seine Nachfolgerin, Königin Anne, leitete umgehend eine Offensive gegen die Nonkonformisten ein. Defoe war aufgrund seiner Pamphlete und politischen Schriften ein naheliegendes Ziel. Sie ließ ihn vor allem wegen seines Pamphlets von 1702 verhaften: „The Shortest-Way with the Dissenters. Or, Proposals for the Establishment of the Church.“ In dieser Schrift plädierte er auf satirische Weise für deren Ausrottung. Außerdem verspottete er gnadenlos sowohl die High-Church-#Tories als auch jene Dissenter, die scheinheilig „gelegentliche Konformität“ praktizierten. #Satire #Schriftsteller #Bücher #Belletristik #Redefreiheit #Roman #Autor #Religion #Defoe #Zensur
