Grund dafür war die Veröffentlichung einer politisch-satirischen Streitschrift. Anstelle von Steinen bewarfen ihn die Menschen jedoch mit Blumen. Defoes berühmtestes Buch, Robinson Crusoe (1719), wurde – abgesehen von der Bibel – häufiger übersetzt als jedes andere Buch der Geschichte. Er verfasste außerdem Moll Flanders und Ein Tagebuch eines Pestjahres. Im Jahr 1702 starb Wilhelm III. Seine Nachfolgerin, Königin Anne, leitete umgehend eine Offensive gegen die Nonkonformisten ein. Defoe war aufgrund seiner Pamphlete und politischen Schriften ein naheliegendes Ziel. Sie ließ ihn vor allem wegen seines Pamphlets von 1702 verhaften: „The Shortest-Way with the Dissenters. Or, Proposals for the Establishment of the Church.“ In dieser Schrift plädierte er auf satirische Weise für deren Ausrottung.
