Oh, dearest language learners, if you are tackling learning the genders of nouns in a new language, please start by understanding that "gender" in this case is used as the linguistic term for different *categories* of words. Linguistic gender and social gender are not the same. Linguistic gender is based on conventions of spelling and etymology for the most part (hence the changes from one language to another), is not random, & can be learned systematically. @SecondUniverse@autistics.life I like your second idea better than your first. So many things are unecessarily gendered already without adding to it. I lived in a community that spoke a language with no gender (so one word for he, she, it, him her, his, its). How refreshing that was! I also realised how in English we always ask the gender of a baby so we know how to refer to it, making gender a big deal right from day one of life outside the womb.😞 #gender #language

Hiberno-English word/phrase of the day: Clip o' the reel (also: kip of the reel) This idiom describes an activity that would occasion disturbance and craic. "The same old clip o' the reel when the girls came home from the dance." The phrase comes directly from traditional Irish music and dance culture. A "reel" is a fast-paced, high-energy traditional dance in 4/4 time. Thus calling something a "clip o' the reel" means it has that same energetic and lively rhythm. #ireland #slang #language

Hiberno-English word/phrase of the day: Clash of the Ash This is a phrase used to signify, romantically, the game of hurling: hurleys are traditionally made from the wood of the ash tree. The tree is supposed to be 30 years old, and the wood taken from where the roots spread, so that the grain of the wood will not go with the length of the stick, making it liable to split. #ireland #slang #language

Any Ukrainian speakers out there can lend a hand with some vocabulary? I’m writing a piece of fantasy fiction in a setting inspired by Ukraine. In it, a character calls out to elemental spirits commanding them to rest, speaking Ukrainian to do so. Just, “Rest.” Finding a word for rest has turned up a lot of options from casual to funerary. I wonder if the use of old (how old are they really?) books to train language models will re-awaken old usages in English. Like when people try to argue that the mistake they make today is legit because it's attested from 1704. And has been abandoned since. 😄 #llm #ai #language

Current hills I'm dying on w language.

  • Normalizing using "they/them" until I know someone's identity. I'm actually good at this one, so I'm trying to explain why I use it to others.

(It's respectful and avoids mistakes)

  • Convincing hetero ppl to drop "my gf / my bf / my wife / my husband" for "my partner."

(Good allyship! Less gender divisions!)

  • Swapping the super common "u guys" for "u" or "u all".

(Guys is superfluous, u know? I didn't make the joke abt men lol chill I'm trying to be serious)

  • Dropping all ingrained "Christian as default" and "Christan as normal" language.

(This is a whole ass blog entry tbh. It's SO ingrained and limits us so much. Ex: Being "religious" doesnt mean only Christian, Jewish, or Muslim.)

  • Using "mind" instead of "brain" or "head" when I mean my personality or quirks or thoughts.

(I'm maybe running on a fat and snot goop computer but thats not ME.)

  • Using "people" instead of "humans."

(Human as default annoys me. I'm not human. A lot of u aren't either.)

does anyone know if this is right? the possessive apostrophe + s is a contraction of ‘his’ as in the lord of salisbury his pavan. the lord of salisbury’s pavan. (which is a piece by orlando gibbons, if you’re wondering). if so, it’s a tiny gendered corner of the language that goes unnoticed most of the time. lady rich her galliard. lady rich’r galliard? alas no. (that one’s a john dowland piece.) #language
