New hashtag-laden #introduction post since moving to a new instance: My name is Scott Chaussée, I research #LandscapeArchaeology and #MarineArchaeology using #GIS, #Geophysics and #UAVs. I also teach online #Archaeology courses at Aberystwyth University in #Wales. I will speak at length about #LordOfTheRings at almost any opportunity.

We've reached the point where we're having to actively degrade the UI and remove useful features of the small scientific database I co-maintain (https://xronos.ch) to try and reduce the extreme load imposed by (unwanted and politely-asked-to-go-away) AI crawler bots. Conversations about new features have to ask whether it's going to make the crawler load problem worse. #OpenData #OpenScience #AIslop #Archaeology

Duck decoys found in 1924 inside Lovelock Cave (Nevada), sealed up approximately 2400 years ago by an earthquake. The one on the right is apparently a canvasback (Aythya valisineria). Anybody got a speaking gig for me? Keynote, endowed lecture, guest lecture series, residency, visiting professorship? I lost my job to Vladimir Putin when the spiking heating-gas price messed up my uni's finances. Right now it looks like I'll start burning my savings in mid-November if nothing comes up. That is, if I consider the award I got for previous writings as actually being a grant for future writings. Otherwise my savings start to burn in mid-August. #archaeology

RE: https://mastodon.social/@bsrome/116528449038739261 This looks like a very useful volume whose contributions expand upon the important and influential work Prof Simon Keay conducted on the archaeology and economy of the Roman empire. @histodons@fedigroups.social #archaeology #AncientRome #RomanEmpire

PAST 112 is now online. Some lovely reading for this bank holiday weekend: Bronze Age lunula, struck quartz, Bronze Age awls, a reflection from the wonderful Tom Björklund and a response to the PAST 111 article on recumbent stone circles. Enjoy! :) #Archaeology https://www.prehistoricsociety.org/publications/past/112

Wooly rhinos roamed Wales 120,000 years ago, and their teeth have been found in a cave beneath Pembroke Castle. Wogan Cavern has already produced hippo bones, mammoth remains & stone tools from early Homo sapiens. A five-year University of Aberdeen dig starts in May. Britain's prehistory is crazy. 🦛 Full story: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8ejjw7377jo #history #uk #britain #wales #archaeology

Will be sold to highest bidder - collection broken up, histories lost & disappearing into private collections, some overseas... Issue of legacy collections - where owners or heirs don't want things, will only get more common... #Archaeology #Treasure #Detecting 🏺 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c70drpjqvdgo

2,500-year-old mass grave sheds light on burial practices in Judah during Persian period A team of Israeli and German archaeologists has found the skeletal remains of up to 89 individuals, most of them infants and young children, inside a repurposed ancient cistern at Tel Azekah, a site about 19 miles southwest of Jerusalem, in what researchers say is the first discovery of its kind in Israel. #MassGrave #Discovery #Archaeology #ExcavationinIsrael #Bible #Jerusalem Source: https://www.christianpost.com/news/mass-grave-sheds-light-on-burial-practices-in-judah.html #Faith #ChristianNews #Bible

Fishing about 3,500 years ago 🎣 Bronze Age copper-alloy fishing hooks, from the pile dwelling settlement at Meersburg-Haltnau/Lake Constance. #Fish was a staple diet for pile dwellers - caught with hooks and lines, nets, harpoons, and fish traps. 📷 Archäologisches Landesmuseum Baden-Württemberg #archaeology

Things used in everyday life are the real archaeological treasures! This sewing needle was made from animal bone some 13,000 years ago. Some designs simply don't need to be improved, because form and functions were perfectly matched from the start Length: 5.6cm 📷 Landesmuseum Württemberg #archaeology

Ancient Greece’s most famous oracle was just high on gas fumes. From @popsci@universeodon.com: "The Oracle of Delphi, also known as the Pythia, likely inhaled ethylene to enter her famous trance." https://flip.it/sAbjVa #Archaeology #Greece #Science

12,000-year-old elk hide, sewn with hand-spun cord, found in an Oregon cave. Likely the world's oldest known sewing. Our nan claims she's been at it just as long. 🧵 Dry caves preserve everything. Ancient humans were extraordinary. What do you reckon they were making? https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/these-12000-year-old-scraps-of-elk-hide-may-be-the-worlds-oldest-known-examaples-of-sewing-180988200/ #caving #history #americanhistory #ancienthumans #archaeology

I wonder which of these 25 ingots @findsorguk.bsky.social (all were returned to finder...) ended up being melted down? There's very few truly undiagnostic finds - most are awaiting a person or technique to decode their secrets... #Treasure #Detecting #Archaeology 🏺 https://finds.org.uk/database/images/index/sort/updated/objecttype/INGOT/imageRights/Isle+of+Wight+Council Text from: https://spectator.com/article/why-a-set-of-gold-coins-have-divided-british-archeologists/
