The network effect is crucial to every social platform, and what differentiates them is how they are able to match IRL connections with online ones, and we can do this, but it needs to be done carefully and in a way that preserves privacy and user autonomy across platforms and services. No single software should have the ability to wall off access, or we become the thing we worked so hard to replace. More details soon 👀 #ActivityPub #Discovery #FriendFinder

Discovery and finding your friends on the fediverse can be tricky. Either you upload your entire contact list to a central service (nope), or you leverage clever invite methods that people share out of band, to connect IRL people on the fediverse. Could be as simple as a special invite QR code or link your users can share anywhere, that when visited, onboard them and automatically follow the inviter. Loops is working on this! Simple, yet powerful, and privacy friendly 🚀 #Loops #Discovery

Today I did my monthly biodiversity survey by bike along the Summit Road of the Port Hills of Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ. And, along it I found the first ever Canterbury record, and second South Island record, of the toatoa bud gall mite, *Aceria victoriae*. 😀 These native mites make distinctive galls on the NZ native plant, toatoa (*Haloragis erecta*). Yet, after they were described as a species from specimens collected in Wellington in 1956/57, nobody recorded them. That is, until Nicholas Martin found them in Auckland in 2012. Nicholas Martin put out the call for entomologists to look for them, yet only a few more were found, and all in Auckland. I looked and couldn't find them around Christchurch. Then, last year, Lisa Bennett on #iNaturalist found them in Wellington and Joseph Knight found them on Otago Peninsula. Inspired by their finds, I was looking carefully for them today and found one plant with the galls. It's a mystery why they've been so cryptic as their host plant is common. I think it underscores how little we still know about the little creatures that live in NZ with us. https://www.inaturalist.nz/projects/hunt-for-the-toatoa-bud-gall-mite #NZ #NaturalHistory #entomology #mites #discovery #CitizenScience

Looks like Flatpak discovery will move from one mostly generally accepted hub to a gazillion of repos since the performative LLM complaints have befallen the possible single hub. (Partially half-understandable arguments, partially performative fluff for my taste) Which is ok as it triggers competition that might lead to better outcomes. (bazaar vs cathedral and all, rite? 😏 ) And removes a possible single point of failure. Now what I'd like to see is an approach that does discovery of those repos and enables search across those repos without a single point of failure. As e.g. a single, centrally hosted index for repos to register to would be. Flatpak already uses a reverse-dns-namespace structure internally. Anything that would leverage that? Wouldn't help with enumeration though. Something something DHT/Gossip/...? (as the cool thing from the past) Clearly a problem that will arise with more of the expectable decentralized systems that need uniform discovery and search. What's the Fedis wisdom on current academic approaches that might be interesting around this? Or bastardized routing tech, yet another idea on how to twist DNS into a pretzel, etc? Dare I say: Blockchain (as the unpopular thing before the LLMs 🤣 ) Throw you best Arxiv posts etc. at me. I'm just curious about the state-of-the-art techn for now, all smirk and sarcasm aside. #discovery #search #decentralized #routing #dns #fedimeta #flathub #dht #cooltechfromthepast #llm #selfhosting #fossdrama #spof #singlepointoffailure

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🪐🔭 For the first time, astronomers have detected an #atmosphere on a rocky #planet in the habitable zone of another #star. The super-Earth LHS 1140 b, located 50 light years away, shows signs of a #helium dominated atmosphere escaping into #space.
