“Better safe than sorry” For release 0.5.0 of #Censor, a lot of work went into improving the security of PDF redaction. PDF documents are tricky, and irrevocably removing elements from them is even more. With this release, before saving a redacted document, garbage is now properly collected and documents are sanitized, which means that metadata, page thumbnails, etc. are removed. Also, vector graphics are now removed with a more strict option when they overlap with redaction rectangles. On top of that, I added redaction of PDF annotations. The user interface was refreshed: with undo and redo buttons in the toolbar and improved document saving experience. Drawing rectangles is now indicated by a crosshair cursor. “Zoom in, zoom out, redact your points!” #Censor v0.7.0 ships improved zooming with pinch-to-zoom gesture on touchpads and touchscreens and various security bug fixes. The upstream #PyMuPDF library has some issues treating these documents. Thus, I implemented manual transformation and drawing of the redaction rectangles, and verified the proper redaction with a specially created sample document, submitted to the collection by #pypdf: https://github.com/py-pdf/sample-files/pull/36 Additionally, point- or line-like elements are now properly redacted. Sanitization during post-processing keeps now entries in form fields (note: this changes previous behavior). “Annotation censoring everywhere” #Censor, the #PDF document #redaction tool for the #GNOME desktop, got a minor update to v0.7.1. This solves an issue with annotations that could not be redacted in some files. Thanks to Julian Smith from #Artifex for fixing it upstream. In case you do not use the Flatpak package, you may need to wait for your distribution maintainers to update PyMuPDF’s version. Hindi has been added to the languages you may now speak with Censor. #Censor, the #PDF document #redaction tool for the #GNOME desktop, was released in version v0.7.3. A bug was fixed that sometimes prevented files to be saved with the “Save” menu entry or associated keyboard shortcut Ctrl+S. Censor’s #Flatpak package comes with the latest version of the upstream library #PyMuPDF (1.28.0).

Three new languages have been added to Censor since the last announcement here: Basque, Swedish, and Ukrainian. Thanks to the translators! You may contribute to translations at https://translate.codeberg.org/engage/censor

“Banish the ghosts” #Censor, the #PDF document #redaction tool for the @gnome@floss.social desktop, was released in version 0.8.0: https://codeberg.org/censor/Censor/releases/tag/v0.8.0 This version comes with major improvements to secure redaction of invisible elements: first, point- or line-like elements on page borders, and second, elements located outside of pages, quasi in infinity. These “ghosts” are now redacted or you’ll get warned during post-redaction-validation if redaction wasn’t possible. “Preparing for the blackout” #Censor, the #PDF document #redaction tool, which allows you to draw black rectangles and permanently remove text and images below them, was released in version 0.9.0 (with a follow-up v0.9.1): https://codeberg.org/censor/Censor/releases/tag/v0.9.0 This version concentrates on draft and UI features. You can now save drafted redactions to the PDF document as PDF redaction annotations. Alternatively, you may export them to a JSON file, which may serve as a template for future redaction sessions. Censor’s welcome screen with new drop-file support and the keyboard shortcuts dialog were revised. On top of that, you may now censor in fullscreen mode. Looks like Flatpak discovery will move from one mostly generally accepted hub to a gazillion of repos since the performative LLM complaints have befallen the possible single hub. (Partially half-understandable arguments, partially performative fluff for my taste) Which is ok as it triggers competition that might lead to better outcomes. (bazaar vs cathedral and all, rite? 😏 ) And removes a possible single point of failure. Now what I'd like to see is an approach that does discovery of those repos and enables search across those repos without a single point of failure. As e.g. a single, centrally hosted index for repos to register to would be. Flatpak already uses a reverse-dns-namespace structure internally. Anything that would leverage that? Wouldn't help with enumeration though. Something something DHT/Gossip/...? (as the cool thing from the past) Clearly a problem that will arise with more of the expectable decentralized systems that need uniform discovery and search. What's the Fedis wisdom on current academic approaches that might be interesting around this? Or bastardized routing tech, yet another idea on how to twist DNS into a pretzel, etc? Dare I say: Blockchain (as the unpopular thing before the LLMs 🤣 ) Throw you best Arxiv posts etc. at me. More fork drama ensuing as was to be expected: https://github.com/flathub-infra/documentation/pull/641 Also, thanks for highlighting the existence of https://flatpark.org/ People hosting their own flatpak repos for their apps is increasing as it appears to me too. Luckily the format, tooling and docs for this are pretty useful and enable easy publication straight from Github actions or the likes. Compared to Flathub a rather pleasant experience. I think it's overdue for #Flathub to start charging for app submission reviews. or charge app publishers $5/month. then hire 3 full-time reviewers with the money.

Heute ist ein sehr praktisches Tool auf #Flathub rausgekommen, mit dem man normale Audiodateien in Hörbuch-Dateien (.M4B) umwandeln kann. Kommt mir gerade gelegen, weil ich in den letzten Tagen einige alte Hörspiel-CDs auf meinen Computer gerippt habe. So, uh… I opened #Shelly on #CachyOS to install another browser and the first three recommendations are *all* AI tools. Not sure how to feel about this. No clue how it's determined with Shelly anyway, but given it's probably based on some statistic (it keeps being like this after restarting Shelly or reloading the repo) it still rubs me the wrong way. #Linux #Flathub
