Looks like Flatpak discovery will move from one mostly generally accepted hub to a gazillion of repos since the performative LLM complaints have befallen the possible single hub. (Partially half-understandable arguments, partially performative fluff for my taste) Which is ok as it triggers competition that might lead to better outcomes. (bazaar vs cathedral and all, rite? 😏 ) And removes a possible single point of failure. Now what I'd like to see is an approach that does discovery of those repos and enables search across those repos without a single point of failure. As e.g. a single, centrally hosted index for repos to register to would be. Flatpak already uses a reverse-dns-namespace structure internally. Anything that would leverage that? Wouldn't help with enumeration though. Something something DHT/Gossip/...? (as the cool thing from the past) Clearly a problem that will arise with more of the expectable decentralized systems that need uniform discovery and search. What's the Fedis wisdom on current academic approaches that might be interesting around this? Or bastardized routing tech, yet another idea on how to twist DNS into a pretzel, etc? Dare I say: Blockchain (as the unpopular thing before the LLMs 🤣 ) Throw you best Arxiv posts etc. at me. I'm just curious about the state-of-the-art techn for now, all smirk and sarcasm aside. #discovery #search #decentralized #routing #dns #fedimeta #flathub #dht #cooltechfromthepast #llm #selfhosting #fossdrama #spof #singlepointoffailure

How do open protocol networks compare to walled-garden ad engines in 2026? We analyze the infrastructure, monetization shifts, and data architecture defining decentralized vs. centralized social platforms. Understanding federated business models is vital for building sustainable digital ecosystems. @brayd@social.brayd.blog there is always #matrix but from my experience it is way heavier than xmpp. OMEMO, the XMPP E2E thing, is/was based on the Signal (Axolotl) crypto protocol and probably doesn't work worse than what Matrix gives you in that regard. Both have ample selection on servers and clients these days. Give both a try. #xmpp #omemo #axolotl #e2ee #e2e #matrix #selfhosing #decentralized #instantmessaging

🚀 #dokieli ( https://dokie.li/ ) is a web-based #decentralized article #publishing and #annotation #application and browser extension, built as an #opensource ( https://git.dokie.li/ ) project using #webstandards. dokieli enables individuals and communities to publish, share, and annotate articles using their preferred identities and storage, and you are always free to switch to another application and take your content with you.

Just realized most people stopped utilizing "collections" fairly early on due to lack of wide scale server adoption. At first I thought it was lack of server updates but I'm now I'm realizing some server admins want more focus on decentralization from centralized algorithms or they're worried that it may warrant some form of ease with data mining? #mastodon #decentralized #fediverse

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@baileytownsend/116952597706316959 I want to follow this up with an AMAA (ask me anything #atproto!) I've done a few of these on #bluesky and thought it might be fun to do one here! I don't believe in dumb questions, so please ask me any you may have! Happy to answer anything, or at least hopefully point you in the right direction! Feel free to reply your questions to this post. Also feel free to even ask me stuff like "Is atproto really #decentralized", "Aren't relays/PDS expensive?", "What do migrations look like there?", etc. Nothing is off the table, and I'd be glad to answer anything! Good chance I will have questions in the future about #activitypub and #mastodon that I will be asking!

Hey y'all!

My name is Bailey, I'm an open source software developer who is very active in the AT Protocol community. Excited to be here to check out more about ActivityPub, but more importantly to make some new friends and talk about tech/software development!

A bit more about my work with atproto

  • I manage a PDS at https://selfhosted.social
  • I wrote a migration tool for accounts going between PDSs called https://pdsmoover.com
  • I wrote a service that sits in front of a PDS to add 2FA (something y'all already smoking us on!)
  • I am active in a few groups. https://npmx.dev as a core team member and a contractor with eurosky.social

Excited to be here and happy to answer any questions anyone has about AT Protocol and just talk software!

After I was arrested, I decided to change the way we promote and introduce DeltaChat. Until then, we had always presented DeltaChat merely as a communication channel for when the internet goes down in Iran, and people used it exactly for that reason. But now that DeltaChat has drawn so much attention in Iran, and even someone like me has been arrested for promoting it, I think it's much wiser to shift our content strategy. Instead of portraying DeltaChat only as a way out during internet blackouts, it's better to introduce it as a practical, everyday tool. Honestly, getting back into this kind of work is very difficult for me. But still, I genuinely believe it can be very helpful and I feel I have to do it. My goal is for ordinary people in Iran to use DeltaChat for its actual features and built-in tools, not just as an emergency app. Ultimately, I want DeltaChat to become a mainstream, everyday messenger here in our own Iran at least here and maybe, just maybe, even help people in other places too. But well, that's exactly the big challenge. #deltachat #decentralized #freesoftware

Crucially, everything about this is fully e2e encrypted and decentralised: your account is a crypto key, and you are mainly responsible for keeping the list of people you are "friends" with. 3rd party servers act as dumb "mailbox" relays (to make up for the fact that most people's devices aren't always online or can't easily work as p2p), but only store fully encrypted payloads, and can theoretically be replaced by any other system. 2/ 🧵 #e2ee #crypto #security #decentralized #p2p

Why is it different here? The answer is obvious, but bears repeating. The Fedi is truly a #decentralized network. If the owners of your instance suspend your account, you actually do have the option to set up shop on another instance and continue to interact on the network. You are not banned from the network. No one has that power. And, importantly here it is the owners who must be careful not to alienate users with capricious rules. The dynamic is reversed. Here the users have the power. 3/

The focus on a single guard or authority figure for civil order misses the point. Real security is built through decentralized community resilience, where neighbors look out for each other and trust is distributed. The guard is just a symbol; the network is the strength. #guard #communityresilience #decentralized

Brilliant to see such a thoughtful report, backed by @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu reference the power of decentralised social networks as we move towards digital sovereignty in the EU!
