The concentration of power in Silicon Valley happened partly because we let it. We accepted a few platforms as inevitable. We built our communities there because that’s where everyone was. It wasn’t because their technology is better. It was a choice—made again and again by the people on those platforms, by investors, and by policymakers.
A different choice is possible, but it requires that those of us building alternatives actually believe what we say about cooperation. It means assuming good faith from people building different projects. It means investing in infrastructure that doesn’t benefit us alone.
We, the builders of the open social web, are the only ones who can make that choice.
It starts with deciding that our mission matters more than winning alone.

I can't think of anything else right now except that I just created an #APnative article using #ghost. How to explain what that points to for the future of social media but really all of how we determine together what deserves attention. Which has huge civic and cultural implications. I'm just stuck.

It's not microblogging, it's our social news feed.
We're thinking about this all wrong. Until we focus more on the boosts, the algos will keep growing and driving people away while big money continues to dominate public attention, debasing our culture and civics.

According to the @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu #TechSovereignty package, released today, the #EU is currently reliant on foreign providers for over 80% of its critical digital products, services, and infrastructure. We're thrilled to see the Commission acknowledge that this is an issue, and lay out a strategy to fix it.
We view this announcement as validation of Mastodon’s mission at the highest level; the Commission’s strategy is grounded in European values that Mastodon shares including security, sustainability, and human-centric design.
What’s more, the EU's explicit strategy is to build and deeply invest in #OpenSource offerings across the entire technology stack. The significant nature of this commitment provides institutional validation and will bring significant policy, funding, and competitive advantages to open source projects like #Mastodon.

If you haven’t met them, they’re the grandfather & grandkid duo that co-admin #TurtleIsland, a server focused on building community with Native/Indigenous people, other BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) people, and allies.
