Large precolonial villages in Brazil’s Cerrado practiced maize-based polyculture, study finds A new study offers the clearest picture yet of how Indigenous communities lived in Brazil’s Cerrado before European contact. The findings challenge the long-running idea that people in the region either survived as mobile hunter-gatherers or relied on large-scale maize farming More info: https://archaeologymag.com/2026/07/precolonial-villages-in-brazil-practiced-maize-based-polyculture/ Follow @archaeology@mstdn.social #archaeology #archeology #archaeologynews #anthropology #precolonial

The opening up of #Chaco Canyon to drilling by the #Trump admin is utterly horrifying to me. The sacred kivas and town sites…so many UNESCO heritage areas. Awful villainous decision. #arizona #archeology https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/arizona/2026/07/16/blm-plans-to-open-chaco-canyon-to-drilling-fast-tracks-review/90937169007/

It's my raven friend at Hovenweep Nat. Mon., but I haven't seen it for the last several years, sadly. It used to sit on the structure seen in the photo that stands at the head of a narrow canyon surrounded by similar structures. The raven would sit there making gurgling croaking noises, beak snaps, & caws that would echo on the wind up & down the canyon as if it were asking: "Where did all of the ancient ones go? Where are they?" #Archeology #Travel #RoadTrip #Birds #Photography #Darktable

Would you believe that coffee mattered 1000 years ago to the Ancestral Puebloans? One could surmise that looking at this Pueblo II period mug. I don't know about the coffee, but this is a 1000-year-old mug. (East-central Arizona. Cup is displayed behind some fairly dirty plexiglass.) #VisitWithRespect #Archeology #Arizona #Travel #RoadTrip
