Beach mustard pods are ripe for picking along the beaches in Denmark now. They're succulent and crisp with a fiery mustard flavor. Pour hot vinegar-water-sugar over them and let them pickle for a while to get a condiment. #Foraging #CakileMaritima

The blackberries went red to black along the fencerow this week. Goldenrod is thinking about it, not committed yet. This is the stretch the old calendars barely name. Past the solstice, before the first harvest. The leaf at full size and the fruit still hard and the light already a minute shorter each evening than it was last week. Nothing is ripening. Everything is holding. Tha an talamh a' cuimhneachadh — the earth remembers. What are you holding right now that hasn't ripened yet? https://twp.ai/4hsxtj #DeepSummer #Nature #Blackberries #Foraging #Druid #Pagan #EarthBased #Phenology #Georgia #Garden #Solidarity #Photography #Gaelic #NatureWriting

Canada's Foraged Green Fiddleheads are a distinct Canadian vegetable that isn't cultivated on farms. They are the coiled, young fronds of the ostrich fern, foraged from wild, damp areas in Eastern and Central Canada. Their harvest season is very short, lasting only a few weeks in the spring, making them a sought-after ingredient. For safety, they must always be thoroughly cleaned and cooked before consumption. #Canada #Foraging #Food #Agriculture https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiddlehead_fern

For the tired that sleep won't touch — the bone-deep flatness that comes after months of bracing. Rhodiola. The golden root, the one that grows where almost nothing else will. Chop the dried root, cover it in vodka, cap it, set it in a dark cupboard three to four weeks, shake when you remember. A dropperful in water in the morning. Never at night. The Siberian herders swore by it before the word "adaptogen" existed. Start low. It's a steadying, not a jolt. What do you reach for when sleep isn't the thing that's broken? https://twp.ai/4hsmIY #Herbalism #Adaptogens #Rhodiola #HerbalMedicine #Wellness #Foraging #Druid #Photography #News #LGBTQ #Pride #EarthBased

A mind running hot all week wants the slow medicine. Lion's mane, simmered low forty minutes — a decoction, not a quick steep — until the broth turns faintly sweet and the shaggy flesh goes tender. Drink it warm. #LionsMane #Herbalism #MedicinalMushrooms #Foraging #Wellness #Nature #Food #QueerNews #LGBTQ #Pride #Solidarity #Herbs ↳ (self-reply 1) The old herbalists reached for the slow simmer to draw the deep medicine out of a tough thing. Lion's mane gives it up only to patience.

Red clover — seamrag dhearg. Pick the blossoms in full sun after the dew burns off, when the heads are dry and springy and the bees have had their turn. Steep a heaping tablespoon in near-boiling water, covered, ten minutes. Covered matters — that's the whole medicine going up your ceiling otherwise. #Herbalism #RedClover #HerbalMedicine #Foraging #FolkMedicine #Gaelic #ScottishGaelic #Apothecary #Plants #Druid #Pagan #QueerWitch #WildCrafting #Botany

Motherwort. The lion's-tail. Luibh a' chridhe — the herb of the heart. A strong short steep of the dried leaf, or a small dropperful of tincture, for when the chest is doing that fluttering, over-revved thing grief and too much news will do to it. Bitter enough that you'll respect it. Generations of women reached for it. It asks nothing but a weedy sunny corner to grow wild in. The little heart-notch clover at the wood's edge tastes like rain made edible. Wood sorrel — seamsag in the old tongue. Pinch a few leaves in the damp shade and taste that clean, sour, lemon-bright snap. Scatter it raw over a salad or float it on cold soup just before serving. It's real vitamin C and a taste like nothing you can buy. One word of respect: it's sharp with oxalic acid, so keep it a bright accent, a handful, never a whole bowl. Cattail. The marsh's quiet pantry, standing in the shallow water at the edge of ponds and ditches you've walked past your whole life. In deep summer the green spikes give up a golden pollen you can shake straight into a bag — bright, protein-rich flour. Comb the ripe spike over a bowl, fold that gold half-and-half with regular flour, and you've got pancakes the color of the sun. The lower white shoots, peeled, are the "Cossack's asparagus" — crisp, cucumber-sweet, raw. The plant that feeds you is only as clean as the water that fed it. What grows edible where you already walk? Crush a small handful fine between your palms, rub the dust onto pork or roots before the heat. A pinch, no more — the oil is potent and it's a documented abortifacient, so never for anyone pregnant or trying to be. Respect it and it gives you nutmeg, pine, cold water. The taste of a Scottish bog on a plate. #Herbalism #FolkMedicine #Foraging #Druid #ScottishGaelic #Trans #LGBTQ #LGBTQIA #QueerNews #Pride #Paganism Full issue, herbs and all → https://twp.ai/4htLBW

Bog myrtle. Roid, in the Gaelic. The Highlanders stuffed it in their plaids against the midges — then bittered their ale with it for four centuries before hops ever won the argument. https://twp.ai/4htLBP #Herbalism #FolkMedicine #Foraging #Druid #ScottishGaelic #Trans #LGBTQ #LGBTQIA #QueerNews #Pride #Paganism

Bog myrtle. Roid, in the Gaelic. The Highlanders stuffed it in their plaids to keep the midges off, then brewed it into ale for four hundred years before hops ever won the argument. Strip a small handful, crush it fine between your palms, rub the resinous dust onto pork before it hits the heat. A pinch, no more — the oil is potent, and it's an abortifacient, so never for anyone pregnant. Nutmeg and pine and cold water. The taste of a Scottish bog on a summer plate.
