The blackberries went red to black along the fencerow this week. Goldenrod is thinking about it, not committed yet. This is the stretch the old calendars barely name. Past the solstice, before the first harvest. The leaf at full size and the fruit still hard and the light already a minute shorter each evening than it was last week. Nothing is ripening. #ClimateDiary Yesterday another evening walk, beautiful light again, but this time unsettling. Chestnuts almost fully formed, ripened blackberries, dried brown dropped leaves everywhere, and of course dried grass. 12th July. I mean, this really is not normal, right? Chestnuts and blackberries in July? (or was i not paying attention before; perennial question- #Phenology)

Deep in this stretch of high summer the land does its slow patient thing regardless of us. The blackberries are darkening on the canes along every Georgia fence line, sour to sweet in their own time, asking no one's permission. Somewhere a wetland is filling.
