What's Surviving the Heatwaves? Nature is struggling in the heat, but some plants are faring better than others. I'm recording the species that will become increasingly important if this is to be the new norm. To start - Wild Marjoram, Greater Knapweed, Common Restharrow, Dwarf Thistle #Nature #WildflowerHour #Wildlife #ClimateChange

Not a flower as such, but a rather nice Robin's Pincushion, a feathery gall caused by the reaction of its Rose host (Sweet Briar, in this case, I think) to the larvae of a gall wasp. #wildflowerHour #wildflowers #wasps

18/07/2026 - A few lovely wild flowers I saw on my walk along the coast at St Cyrus for #WildFlowerHour. The wild flowers are different to the ones I see round Aberdeen 50 miles north. I wonder if it's due to being the other side of the Highland Boundary Fault Restharrow Hare's-foot Clover Clustered Bellflower Wood Vetch #WildFlowers

Ivy Broomrape, a parasitic plant that obtains all of its nutrients from Ivy. It has lost the ability to photosynthesise and therefore has no green on it whatsoever. #Nature #Wildlife #Flowers #Wildflowers #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #NaturePhotography #WildlifePhotography

Heath Spotted Orchid (Dactylorhiza maculata) at its only site in the Bath area. It took me 2 attempts to find the spot, but I was glad when I did - there were about 50 spikes and considerable variation in the colour and markings of the flowers. #Nature #Wildlife #Orchid #Wildflower #Flower #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #NaturePhotography #WildlifePhotography

Lizard Orchid (Himantoglossum hircinum) at Berrow, Somerset. This species is on the edge of its range here in Britain, but appears to be expanding its range, potentially in response to climate change. This one was growing on a sand dune near a golf course and was around 30-40cm high, but they sometimes also grow on road verges, and can reach heights of 90cm. #Nature #Wildlife #Orchid #Wildflower #Flower #WildflowerHour #Plant #Botany #NaturePhotography #WildlifePhotography

Some variety of cornsalad, on a wall. Quite a lot of it, round and about, right now. One has appeared in our front garden as well. #WildflowerHour

This is simultaneously something I've seen many many times (in gardens) and never in my life (in the wild). It appears to be a perfectly normal Broad Bean, except it's not in an allotment or anywhere near one - it was by the pitch at Henley rugby ground. I wonder how it got there. #WildflowerHour #Oxfordshire #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

Highlight of our #wildflower searching this week were a few of the first flowers of Early Spider-orchid on the Purbeck coast. Very many more rosettes, spikes and buds yet to open up, so it was exciting to finally find a few flowers. This time last week, we couldn't find any. Soon there will be thousands. #WildflowerHour #orchids
