I think my home has become #hummingbird central. I have five 8-oz hummingbird feeders and I keep them full all the time in the summer. I'm currently going through 2 quarts of sugar water a week. Birds are buzzing around from first light until last night. Sadly, I'm also #yellowjacket and #hornet central. I just set up another three wasp traps and all three of them were catching #wasps within 20 minutes. I also just sprayed a few hornet nests. So I'll stay inside for a while.😬

In case anyone needs to know, if you jostle an inflorescence of yarrow over a piece of white paper, very small (1 mm) wasps fall out. Most tend to hop around instead of flying away. Extremely hard to photograph, disappearing and reappearing like miniature Nightcrawlers from the X-Men universe. Am going to chill some plants to slow them down, so stay tuned if you're interested. Not a flower as such, but a rather nice Robin's Pincushion, a feathery gall caused by the reaction of its Rose host (Sweet Briar, in this case, I think) to the larvae of a gall wasp. #wildflowerHour #wildflowers #wasps

PSA: Wood boxes with slits that are marketed as "butterfly houses" are purely decorative. Multiple studies have confirmed that butterflies never use them. But paper wasps (Polistes) do, which is not great for butterfly populations because these wasps hunt caterpillars. Plus they sting, so not great for humans walking by. #butterflies #scam #insects #nature #garden #lepidoptera #wasps

#wasps #waspnest #entomology #insects Advise needed ❗ Dear hive mind (and @futurebird@sauropods.win), it looks like we have a wasp nest in our loft. After our boiler was replaced, two circular holes were left in the fascias that had overflow pipes coming out. Didn't stop to think that would make a perfect entry point for wasps and just noticed a steady stream of wasps going in and out. Time to call pest control (they will of course say yes, give us your money, we'll come and remove it)? Or should I just leave it until winter and then plug those holes after the wasps have left?

I saw this insect yesterday with what appears to be a spine 4 times the length of the body. It could be a wasp of some sort. Can anyone identify it? #wasps

KOLLISION!! ich versuchte gerade die untere wespe, die wohl eine Waldwespe Dolichovespula sylvestris ist zu fotografieren, als die andere, kleinere weiter unten von der doppeldoldenblüte der wilden möhre aufflog und geradewegs in die große hineinrauschte, sich dann erschreckt abstieß und schon weg war bevor irgendjemand begriffen hatte was passiert war. aber ich hab den fotobeweis :D #insects #insekten #krabbeltierchen #wasps #BugOfTheDay #AuwaldRunde #nature #biodiversity #entomology
