Presenting the "Grothenstick"! It is my representation of a scheme (in algebraic geometry). The stick is the Zariski topology. It is a crude approximation of the real thing. But it is good enough to carry a sheaf of rings. And adorned with its sheaf of rings, it looks quite reasonable. In fact, when you get used to it, you no longer see the underlying stick; you just see the rings! #algebraicgeometry #scheme #grothendieck #mathematics

Important note about ideal amplifiers in electronics >Amplifier is the generic term used to describe a circuit which produces and increased version of its input signal. However as we will see in this introduction to the amplifier tutorial, not all amplifier circuits are the same as they are classified according to their circuit configurations and modes of operation. >In “Electronics”, small signal amplifiers are commonly used devices as they have the ability to amplify a relatively small input signal. For example from a Sensor such as a photo-device, into a much larger output signal to drive a relay, lamp or loudspeaker for example. https://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/amplifier/amp_1.html #Electronics #electrónica #Physics #Mathematics #Chemistry #Lineair #Algebra

Users from the #Netherlands - do you remember, or have you heard of, the mnemonic "Meneer Van Dalen Wacht Op Antwoord"? I have been googling for information about this but am looking for more sources, preferably original textbooks from the 20th century. I can find quite a few references to it but only *after* it was already phased out. Let me know if you remember, are interested and/or can help! I must confess up front I do not speak #dutch ! #nederland #wiskunde #math #maths #mathematics

The software practice was once a mathematical activity, à la Hoare, Dijkstra, Bird, et al. But it has not been so, for several decades. If the present #software practice is to mature into a bona fide #engineering practice in the future, #mathematics-based #formal methods, notations, languages, and tools—Z, B, VDM, ACL2, TLA+, Coq, Lean, Agda, Idris, ...—must be adopted. There obviously is no shortage of such tools and techniques. Clearly, many practice areas within IT, including glossy brochure web sites, line-of-business CRUDing apps, and the like, need not be formalised. But certain fields, like operating systems, networking, transportation, utilities, real-time life-critical applications, plant control, voting systems, medical systems, financial systems, defence, and so on, must be mathematical, end-to-end and full-lifecycle—just like traditional engineering fields. Also, there is now an urgent need for a comprehensive framework (statutes, regulations, guidelines, standards, and policies) to normalise the use of #AI in IT, especially in those life-critical practice areas. The time for hoping that the TechBros would self regulate is long gone.

"“He started off solving well-known spectacular problems,” said Tobias Ekholm of Uppsala University. “At a slightly older age, he’s doing this same spectacular work, but he has this ability: He solves a famous problem but does it in a way that creates a framework, a whole new package, that will be useful to other people.”" https://www.quantamagazine.org/john-pardon-wins-the-2026-fields-medal-for-work-in-symplectic-geometry-20260723/ #Mathematics #Mathematicians #Medals #Fields

"Before the introduction of the Arabic notation, multiplication was difficult, and the division even of integers called into play the highest mathematical faculties. Probably nothing in the modern world could have more astonished a Greek mathematician than to learn that, under the influence of compulsory education, the whole population of Western Europe [...] could perform the operation of division for the largest numbers." – Alfred North Whitehead (1861–1947) #quote #mathematics #math #maths

Can you colour the faces of a dodecahedron black and white so that if you stand on one of the faces you can determine your position and orientation by looking at your face and the adjacent faces? #math #maths #mathematics

What is your answer to 18÷3x2=? Boosts appreciated No, this isn't a trick question. An oft-cited blog has made the claim that "most humans" will get the wrong answer, which I think is a completely ridiculous claim, so I want hard data on the split. Unlike some other polls I've run, I want #teacher

Since Detexify is now #AI slop, I have updated my one-pager of advice for learning mathematics to recommend The Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List (https://tug.ctan.org/info/symbols/comprehensive/symbols-a4.pdf) for finding symbols. This is kind of a bad solution, since Detexify solved the problem of knowing how to draw the symbol without knowing its name with a very appropriate use of traditional image recognition. It is absurd that there is no #FLOSS tool I can recommend instead. If no one builds it first, it'll go on my list of things to do. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🫶➕ A mathematician at the University of #Lyon has adapted ecological models to map romantic #relationships, using #predator-#prey equations and the Allee effect. The model identifies a critical threshold below which relationships decline toward separation, factoring in attraction, forgetting rates, and partner responsiveness. Future #AI versions could warn couples before they hit a danger zone. 👉 https://scitechdaily.com/scientists-say-love-follows-mathematical-patterns/ #math #mathematics #love #science #psychology
