#WordWeavers August 10th Does your writing playlist change depending on the scene you're writing? No, since there's no playlist at all. Certainly there's a soundtrack, but…

#WordWeavers August 9th What's the smallest detail you've researched for a story? One of the smallest details I've done research over must be the different protein's roles in the formation of a human genome during fertilization. It's a literally small detail, not only a figurative one.

#WordWeavers 8 Aug: Which character would survive a zombie apocalypse, and why? It’s not something I’ve really thought about as I’m not particularly fond of the modern take on Zombies. If zombies were to feature in my work they’d have to be the good old-fashioned Zombies from Haitian folklore. There seems to be a trend where they’re pitted against all sorts of different protagonists, usually with a title along the lines of XXX versus zombies or zombies versus XXX, so practitioners of magic versus zombies wouldn’t be too far-fetched. I reckon the zombies would lose hands down. #WritersOfMastodon #SecretLife#HowtoSucceed#Author #Novel

#WordWeavers 8/8—Which character would survive a zombie apocalypse, and why? Ha! This is an easy question to answer, because both of the main characters in my main series' would do so easily. Roan's a lion shifter, so he'd make very short work of any undead, even if he wasn't so horror movie literate as to know how to do that anyway. As for Josh in the Josh of the Damned series, he sells frozen burritos to zombies all the time, and they know, if they want their burrito hook up, they can't be bothering him. Also, he has a vampire boyfriend and is currently under Medusa's protection, but the burrito thing is going to carry the most weight.

#WordWeavers 8/8—Which character would survive a zombie apocalypse, and why? Mel. They're a vampire and could easily fend off a hoard of mindless flesh eaters. I reckon most zombies wouldn't be so eager to gnaw on something that smells of death when there's fresh meat to be had.

#WordWeavers 8.3 — If your protagonist had a signature scent, what would it be? Filia: Neutral, smelling like nearly nothing at all unless you're v close and actually why are you standing that close? Dystaria: When she is home: Fresh soap, woodsmoke, heated metal. When she is away for patrols: Likes she's been away for patrols for a while. 🦨 Alt Elle / Dio: Vanilla and tobacco, faintly. Maybe a little something else.

#WordWeavers 21 Jul Do past reviews influence your current writing? Book website reviews are not feedback. Those are for people with plenty of time and opinions to say what they don't like about a book so other people can think "but that sounds good actually" or the other way round. Thoughtful reviews by people who know what they're doing, and maybe even what you're doing, are still for the reader. They're not for the writer. Don't read them as if they're feedback. No good can come of it.

#WordWeavers 7/11—Would your protagonist rather be loved or feared? Why? Roan (in the Infected series) would rather be feared, in the hopes that people would leave him alone. Josh (in the Josh of the Damned series) would liked to be loved, in the hopes the monsters would leave him alone. Funny how that works.

#WordWeavers July 7: What writing or publishing resource do you think everyone should know about? I'm one of those people who write in a text editor. I'm using UltraEdit without AI bullshit. I create eBooks using LibreOffice and Calibre. It's not a particularly mind-blowing process but it works well for me and it is free except for the UltraEdit license if you don't pay for the open source software. I also like Pixabay.com for free photos to use for cover images. 🙂

#WordWeavers 9/7: Which of your characters would be the least likely to write a love song? I'm gonna go with Ruth. I think most characters could get silly enough in love to make the attempt, but Ruth is pretty disillusioned with love and the whole world. If she ever was a romantic, I don't think she is anymore.

#WordWeavers for 1st July 2026

  1. If your MC wore teeshirts, what would be on their favorite one?

Roan actually owns far too many. But his favorite, currently, might be a real one that is available for purchase, and is a very close fit for his life motto. It is simply "Leave them at the bottom of the grave they dug for you". https://voidmerch.threadless.com/designs/leave-them-in-the-grave/masc/t-shirt/classic

#WordWeavers 27/6: Do you use humour in your writing? If so, any tricks to share? Humor is the only thing that makes the darkness bearable, whether it be horror, mystery, or real life, so yes, I use quite a bit of it. My characters usually have good senses of humor and know when to deploy them. The only tricks I know, as far as humor goes, is have a rough childhood and a good amount of repressed hostility. That seems to do the trick.

I want to thank my co-host @BranwenOShea@writing.exchange for the warm, creative and peaceful cooperation we've had over the years. And of course, I want to thank all of you, the #WordWeavers players for your wit, humor, wisdom and sincerity, for sharing your stories and your characters, for contributing community questions. Without all of you, there would be no WordWeavers. I'm happy that I got to do it and that I met all of you 🧡 Keep writing those amazing stories!

Dear #WordWeavers players! We've had so much fun together, but the time has come for me to "retire". The most important thing is the game will continue! @BranwenOShea@writing.exchange will keep it up 🧡 It's been almost 4 years of WordWeavers, plus WritingWonders before that. Those games have given me the most important thing in the new, unfamiliar place that was Mastodon: a community 🥰 So many interesting conversations, wonderful people and awesome books (some of them are still waiting to be read). 1/2

How long have you been working on your WIP? A few days, mostly collecting the arts and thinking how I will organise them. Also I spent some time reading several artbooks as inspiration How much longer do you think it'll take you to finish your WIP? Hopefully a few months (I plan to create several arts and to pay attention to the layout) #wordweavers 2026-05-01 & 2026-05-02

Does your antagonist have any redeeming qualities? Lady d’Arcy thinks women shouldn’t be relegated in the shadows of men. She also considers that leonines aren’t just useless beings, opposite to the general opinion. #wordweavers 2026-05-07
