What makes an "AI datacenter" different than a normal datacenter? Is it just that it's fully dedicated to racks of servers specifically for AI purposes?

Reddit can be a fun place! I was called "ignorant" simply for running #GrapheneOS and knowing ahead of time that tap-to-pay doesn't work. Dunno how "being knowledgeable and having tangible experience in this area" equals being ignorant. People are weird.

Today, I'm thankful for the combination of these two #FreeBSD features: geli-based storage encryptionZFS Before I fly out to help with a family medical emergency, I'm backing up my most important bits to a geli-encrypted encrypted NVMe USB enclosure. It's ZFS all the way down, so I can do something like: # zpool import backups $ zfs snapshot rpool/home/shawn@2026-06-27 $ zfs send -vp rpool/home/shawn@2026-06-27 > /backups/laptop/home-2026-06-27.zfs Rinse and repeat for each ZFS dataset I'm interested in backing up, both for the laptop itself and for the ZFS datasets contained within the VMs on the laptop.

I'm 100% out of ideas. Our servers cannot handle the load the AI/LLM web scraping bots place on #GitLab. #Radicle is turning out to still not be ready for prime-time. I refuse to use #GitHub beyond being a read-only mirror. Self-hosting our code repos is an absolute requirement in order to provide higher levels of OPSEC than what third-party hosted services can provide. So, at the hands of our oligarchic overlords, is this the death of HardenedBSD? Someone please provide me ideas. I have no idea what to try next and I'm desperate.

#Radicle is working fine for #HardenedBSD src and ports between two laptops on the same physical network. But, it's not working in the slightest on the HardenedBSD infrastructure. I cannot get the seed node fully fetching the repos. Radicle just times out. The biggest issue is that it will try to restart the fetch from the very beginning upon failure. So we're transmitting the same exact data many, many, many, many, many, many times only to end up failing again. Radicle should probably archive the data at the point of failure, then when restarting the fetch, it can start from where it left off. Otherwise, we're experiencing first-hand the populist definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over and over again but expecting different results.

It is really heartening and motivating to see the #Radicle community come to aid #HardenedBSD. I'm so grateful folks are helping out, especially at the cost of time, bandwidth, and storage.

I feel full of gratitude this morning.

Woke up this morning to new #Radicle seeders for the #HardenedBSD src and ports repos. This is encouraging to see.

There are a number of issues to fix:

  1. STALE_CONNECTION_TIMEOUT should either be bumped or made configurable (or both).
  2. Filesystem permissions get messed up on #OpenZFS #ZFS but not on UFS or tmpfs.
  3. Bump the node.limits.fetchPackReceive maximum by default to higher than 500MiB (exact value to be chosen later.)
  4. Improvements to cloning without seeding. Right now, a user will need to run rad seed , letting both git and radicle to quiet down, then run rad clone . Otherwise, rad clone will fail.

Dear Business People,

Please send me slide decks prior to our meetings. Doing so will enable me to come to the meeting prepared and potentially with questions in hand.

We'll all be on more even footing with mutual understanding even before the meeting begins.

Sincerely,

One downside to using #ZulipChat as your main method of open source project communications channel: it's not possible to sign up for a new account when connecting from #Tor.

Tools I predict will become more important as time marches on in the next five years:

  1. #reticulum
  2. #radicle
  3. #meshtastic
  4. #meshcore

I really hope we can move back towards a more decentralized and privacy-preserving Internet. These projects will likely play a crucial role in that effort.

@rysiek@mstdn.social Good thoughts! you almost certainly should continue to use Signal, unless you specifically know that this is a big problem for you. If this is a problem for you, you could use Signal behind Tor.Then, the CDN cache is hit from a Tor exit node. It would be great if Signal also provided an Onion Service CDN. That way, no data leaves Tor (if configured to use Tor).

If true, that means a news publisher got advanced notice, and not some operating systems vendors.
