FACEBOOK IS TOXIC. META IS AWFUL. WHY CONTINUE FEEDING IT? 💎 Nearly everyone complains about Facebook and Meta. The algorithms are toxic. The advertising is invasive. The outrage is manufactured. CHILDREN ARE BEING HARMED. Privacy is disappearing. And then millions of people open Facebook or Instagram. Again. And again. I genuinely do not understand it. If you believe these companies are damaging children, manipulating attention, and making billions from human vulnerability, why are you still giving them your presence? Especially the parents. If Facebook and Instagram are unhealthy for your children, what exactly are you modeling by remaining there yourself? “We know this place is harmful, darling, but Mummy and Daddy have photographs to look at.” I left Meta years ago. I didn’t die. My friends did not evaporate. Civilization continued. There is email. There are phones. THERE IS THE OPEN WEB. There is even the terrifying possibility of seeing another human being, god forbid, in person. Meta survives because people who complain about it continue supplying exactly what it needs: Their attention. Their relationships. Their outrage. THEIR CHILDREN. You do not have to wait for Zuckerberg to become a better person. You can simply leave today. I've just made arrangements to get a Cala heat-pump water heater thermal battery installed: https://www.calasystems.com/ We also looked at: https://www.reservoirhome.com/ This looks good too and I would be happy with either. Cala is made in the US and is already supported by Home Assistant Free/Libre/Open-source home automation software: https://www.home-assistant.io/ I refer to these as "thermal batteries" because they allow you to use energy at the time of your choosing, and use it later. This will be the first time I've had the option to choose how much electricity I'm using, and when. (Other than setting my electric car's charging time and level.) Both Reservoir and Cala come with adaptive control algorithms that learn your usage patterns. This is potentially *very useful* for a heat-pump water heater, because heat pumps heat water slowly but efficiently. Predictive/adaptive planning can minimize relying on backup electric resistance heating. A grand(iose) idea: getting Embedded Common Lisp (ECL) running on a Raspbery Pi running Home Assistant to predict need for hot water, car charging, and home heating. I'm imagining fitting single-hidden-layer quantile neural nets (to predict the median and, say, 10% and 90% quantiles, useful for planning purposes) using SPSA: https://www.jhuapl.edu/spsa/ I imagine a modest processor could chew on the fitting for a while, using little memory, and come up with something pretty good. It would be awesome if a small processor running Home Assistant could do this on its own. Totally scratching an itch rather than fulfilling a real need, except that (I think) most existing algorithms are proprietary. Google IDX Product Manager Kirupa Chinnathambi writes a code-backed, step-by-step review of Dijkstra's famous graph algorithm, depth, and breadth first search, touching up on Bellman-Ford and A*. This reminded me of a uni assignment where we recommended shortest path routes to passengers based on geo data from London Tube stations, using A* to compute them. @tomkindlon@disabled.social @mecfs@fedigroups.social SInce half a year after the first crash, a friend of mine uses the #Garmin Venu 3 with #HR monitoring and HRV and alarms, 'cause he didn't trust his feelngs, just the facts. For pacing essential. Connected it to #influx and #grafana for a deeper view. Tried it with #Apple, but they measure the #HRV not at night, but over the whole day with some #algorithms. Additionially he has the data from 3 yrs. #withings #scanwatch without HRV measurement.
