John Tukey the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) inventor, who coined both "bit" and "software" died exactly 26 years ago today. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), one of the most important algorithms in signal processing and data analysis, was introduced by Tukey & Cooley in 1965. In 1805, Gauss - studying the orbits of asteroids Pallas and Juno - came up with a method to interpolate their trajectories from discrete samples. What he came up with was mathematically very close to the modern FFT but Gauss never published that work, and didn’t analyze its computational complexity. It predated even Fourier’s 1822 work on heat diffusion - but without the framing or generalization that Cooley & Tukey would bring 160 years later. In 1965, Cooley & Tukey published their now-famous algorithm that reduced the cost of computing a Discrete Fourier Transform from 𝑂(𝑛²) to 𝑂(𝑛 log⁡𝑛). This leap made real-time signal processing and digital media compression feasible. From radio telescopes to JPEGs, from audio codecs to quantum mechanics - the FFT is everywhere. ⏪ Physicists designed a way to make a quantum system's arrow of time point backward. Not time travel. Something weirder and more useful. Every time you measure a quantum system, the measurement kicks it and pumps energy in. A Los Alamos-led team built feedback protocols that can cancel, amplify, or flip that kick. Run it one way and you recover all the energy the measurement added. Run it harder and the system behaves as if time is flowing in reverse. It's basically a working Maxwell's demon, pulling usable energy out of the act of observing. The catch: it's still theory, published in Physical Review X in February, and real measurements today only catch about half the signal, so the perfect version needs better detectors first. Next up: testing it on superconducting qubits, where it could chip away at decoherence, the thing that keeps breaking quantum computers. I have corrected the Grover’s algorithm code at http://crudfactory.com/PHYSICS.html It now takes a predicate closure to tell it what to search for. Before you actually had to give it the answer to get the answer! This was what the inference engine interpreted an ‘Oracle’ to be. Oracles are practically impossible to understand, to me. They come from Turing theory, don’t they? Well, I’m a functional programmer (though I do often write Ada). #computing #quantumComputing #physics #science #mathematics

After the White House quantum summit, I tested the claim that America built "every layer of the quantum stack." Eight layers. Named researchers. Primary sources. Quick scorecard: The PQC algorithms (ML-KEM, ML-DSA, SLH-DSA) that NIST standardized and that EO 14412 mandates for federal systems? Designed almost entirely by Europeans and Canadians. CWI (Netherlands), Bochum (Germany), IBM Zurich (Switzerland), ENS Lyon (France), Waterloo (Canada). NIST ran the process — that's a real institutional win. But the algorithmic content is international. The enabling infrastructure is even more striking. Dilution refrigerators from Finland (Bluefors) and UK (Oxford Instruments) dominate the market that cools US superconducting quantum computers. Domestic manufacturing exists (Maybell in Denver, Bluefors's Syracuse operation) but the US remains substantially dependent on European-headquartered suppliers. Control electronics from Switzerland (Zurich Instruments), Israel (Quantum Machines), Germany (Rohde & Schwarz). The CHIPS Act quantum investments are partly a response to these dependencies. On the science side: Josephson junction predicted at Cambridge (1962). First superconducting qubit demonstrated at NEC Japan (1999). Surface code traces to Kitaev (Russia). Steane code from Oxford. qLDPC codes from French and Russian mathematicians. The US built the strongest commercial integration and scaling layer. That is a real and hard-won capability. It is not the same as sole authorship of the entire stack. Policy implication: "we built everything" leads to different supply chain decisions than "we built the best integration layer, and it depends on allied supply chains." The second framing is more accurate and produces better policy.
