I asked an #AI model If, in a hypothetical #universe, the speed of #light is not constant & #energy varies with 'c' If we differentiate E=mc² twice with respect to c, what would be the consequences? It said this would destroy the universal causal structure. Stars would collapse, & many other things would happen. No #physicist could explain these outcomes Leaving hostility aside, AI is just a tool. It's up to you whether you use it for good or bad #stem #MultipleDomain #science #physics

Hey, fedi. What smaller non-profits do you recommend for donations?

Some beautiful people have been tipping me for my articles and my accessibility app. That gives me the warm fuzzies.

But I’m going to donate those tips, because other folks need them more. And I’m going to replace my tips links with non-profit donation links.

My current list:

  1. Sogorea Te’ Land Trust
  2. Audre Lorde Project
  3. Equal Justice Initiative
  4. STEM Like a Girl

Who are your faves?

hi all 👋 this is a #Canberra-based post about a kids in #STEM programme, apologies for the wall of text if that’s not relevant to you 😬 does anyone know any Canberra (or surrounds) kids in grades 7-10 who are interested in STEM & would like to join a #LEGO #robotics team? I’m volunteering with a Canberra team participating in the FIRST LEGO League Challenge (FIRST = “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”, it’s not the first one 🤪) the various programmes are broken out into age ranges – info about this particular one (the “challenge” level) is on their website at https://www.firstaustralia.org/first-lego-league-challenge although their website is super confusing & unhelpful unless you already know exactly what you’re looking for this team meets on Sundays in Acton from 11:00-14:00 with the skills building running through until mid-November & then there’s a regional competition in Wollongong on 14th November so if you know anyone who has kids in the right age range that might find this interesting, pls pass on the info & DM me if anyone wants to join or have a chat (pls no personal details, we’ll switch to Signal after an initial DM). I’d especially love to get some more girls & enby folks involved, but the team welcomes all genders I’ve been asked to make it super-duper clear that this is not LEGO Masters – apparently they’ve had a couple of kids come along in previous years only to bail after a few weeks when they didn’t get to build LEGO Masters style stuff 🙃 anyone who’s interested in learning some coding (Python using PyBricks), engineering, & problem-solving while learning about biodiversity (this year’s theme), teamwork, & planning might be a good fit thx all, pls share with anyone who might have or know kids in or near Canberra who would be interested 🙏 #KidsInSTEM #GirlsInSTEM #EnbiesInSTEM

Society is starting to look exactly like what happens when we spend decades treating STEM as the only path worth investing in, while sidelining the humanities. This isn't a criticism of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. We need them. Desperately. They should be well supported. But we also need philosophy, history, literature, languages, ethics, the arts, and every discipline that wrestles with what it means to be human. We need people who can understand the human condition, recognise propaganda, interpret context, think critically about power, engage with complexity, and ask not only how the world works, but what kind of world we ought to build. A society built only to solve technical problems eventually forgets how to solve human ones. #Humanities #STEM #Education #CriticalThinking #Ethics #Democracy #Society

Map of healthcare worldwide. According to the OECD health at a glance tracker (https://www.healthsystemtracker.org/chart-collection/health-spending-u-s-compare-countries) the USA spends ~$10K (USD) per taxpayer to NOT have a universal healthcare system, whereas in Australia we spend ~$5.5K (USD) per taxpayer to have one. #health #science #STEM #humanrights

“I live and work with three basic assumptions: 1) There is no problem in science that can be solved by a man that cannot be solved by a woman. 2) Worldwide, half of all brains are in women. 3) We all need permission to do science, but, for reasons that are deeply ingrained in history, this permission is more often given to men than to women.” -- Vera Rubin in “Opening the Doors,” 1990 talk published in Bright Galaxies, Dark Matter, p. 174. https://qz.com/873005/vera-rubin-quotes-wisdom-from-a-groundbreaking-astronomer-and-working-mother #Science #STEM 6/n

“I insisted on working on problems outside the mainstream of astronomy so that I could work at my own pace and not be pressured by bandwagons. I hope some of you will be able to devise your own paths through the complex sociology of science. Science is competitive, aggressive, demanding. It is also imaginative, inspiring, uplifting. You can do it, too.” -- Vera Rubin, May 17, 1996, graduation address to UCB class of 1996. https://www.themarginalian.org/index.php/2013/07/23/vera-rubin-berkeley-commencement-address/ #Science #STEM 5/n
